Using a LED TV as a Monitor

Today I got a 32" Element (brand name) Class LED TV at Wally World for $150, and I am using it as a Monitor. It has a 1366 x 768 Resolution with a 9 ms response time. True the quality has suffered a bit but it has a nice adjustable Brightness/Contrast setting.

When I get a little richer I plan on getting an actual larger Computer Monitor that will give me back the quality.

What are ya'll's thoughts?

The resolution is very low and the response times are too high for my taste. I wouldn't use a television as a monitor personally, hence why I have a pair of 1080p desktop monitors.

Won't be long now before most 4K monitors (and TV panels with the same resolution) become much more affordable.
Indeed, some are quite good value for money now.
Reckon T:ANE would look great on a 4k 55" panel!
Full HD (1080p) looks good up to about 28" - beyond that you really need to go to higher resolutions like 1440p, or better.
I remember a time when my state-of-the-art 14 or 15" NEC CRT VGA (640 by 480) color monitors used to cost over AUD$1000 a pop.

even though low resolution, are you satisfied enough, regardless what others say? That is all that matters. Should work fine and hold you over for a while.

Well, a element TV/Monitor. Great choice. I just got one sometime this past year, but not as a computer monitor, but as a replacement for my small SANYO TV from 2003.

woweeee...I can just imagine a 55" monitor and quality surround sound to go with it..not sure what the neighbours will say about it though....

Dunno what the neighbors say, Diesel engine's drowning them out.
:hehe:

Trainz sounds great in 5.1 surround, Wonder if 7.1 is better, hmmmm.......

At the end of the day it all boils down to viewing distance - Low res screens close up look rubbish, but at a distance the image is fine to the average person.

UK readers may remember that UK TV was initially broadcast at 405 then later at 625 lines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/405-line_television_system and it seemed great to us at the time !

I have a 27" 4k monitor but, in all honesty, it was not worth the money I paid for it (hindsight etc. :) ).

At the moment my advice would be to stick to full HD screens and wait until 4k screens become cheaper before buying them.

I have been using a Teac 32 inch Tv as a monitor for about 4 years. I also have a 19 inch lcd monitor alongside. The monitor is a little better as far as colour and sharpness go but I find the Tv better overall. I run HDMI at 1920 X 1080.
Cheers,
Mike

This is informative because I just got a 32-inch Samsung LED TV free from Dell and wondered if it would be any good as a monitor. I currently have a small 23-inch Samsung and a 27-inch Samsung LED and the thought was to replace the smaller 23-inch monitor with the 32-inch TV.

After reading this, I might give this a try.

The home server/media center in my living room is connected via HDMI to a Panasonic 55" 4K telly. It used to output straight from IGP but now has my old R9 280X for light 4K gaming. One rather noticeable issue though; there's often slight screen tearing during fullscreen gaming or video playback even with Vsync set to full or half. Haven't really tried to iron that out but there's also the response time as LNER mentioned which makes it unsuitable for twitch gaming. Truck/train/flight sims are fine though.
