USA Pics

Wow - I do not like this new site. I just lost the couple of responses I did. And don't want to hijack this thread

I did extensive research when I originally made the hoppers - it's what I do anyway.

The CNW used steam-era DMIR hoppers and painted a black or boxcar red patch over the herald and other features. These retained their single DMIR-style high hose. They often connected three hoses together to connect with standard cars. I have actually made these models - one with the three hose patch - but have not released them yet.

Here is a pic of a badly rusted one from the CNW Hist. Society site, though many of the captions for other examples are inaccurate.

In terms of length most of the Great Lakes + region ore hoppers are circa 24' to match ore dock and other related facilities - though some, like the LSI are narrower and have to convert cars. In terms of dings if the cars are used for taconite or even raw ore the sides are usually not that damaged. The extensions, however, are another story and I do have an example of that in the quad pack on the MissabeRoad site. The LSI used to drive a back hoe over the tops of the cars to unload them at one point resulting in major damage to the extensions.

If the cars are used for rock service - as was common on the CNW, LSI, etc., then they do get major dimples in the sides . . . but I can't do an example of everything.

I would be willing to do a simple low-sided car with standard hoses in a couple of weathering schemes, with numbers, but it would not be prototypical. If you want the real deal I think you should have to donate to the MissabeRoad site - I think that's fair.

I will announce it when ready in the Freeware section.

I also have a bunch of other roads ready but have to find the time to get the packs together and release them.

The route is Neilsmith's Lakeshore West. I am working on updating the route and extending it to aldershot

Taconite derailment -the hazard of using cars from the 1930's ...

I would rather blame that UK bullhead track than those good old US quality ore jennies! :hehe:

Speaking of taconite... here's some hot stuff on the way:
