Amtrak always did kinda operate bum backwards, didn't they.

MHCs were usually on the rear as well.

The reasoning is because when they rolled into a stop, they could drop an MHC or two (or X-Box) & not have to have a long drawn out switching operation which would leave the passengers stuck in a powerless train for a while.

I'm no Amtrak expert but the screenshots are of a particular train (the Southwest Chief) during a particular time (1992-94). As I recall, The SW Chief usually ran it's MHCs up front. Till about the mid 90's I'm not sure of Amtrak operations elsewhere at that time. But I do remember seeing them in the rear and then they disappeared. After that, it was road railers, then boxcars. now its only superliners and a baggage car.

This is the middle town on my 3 town shortline railroad
TC&W
the TC&W was founded in march of 1959
the railroad baught two sd9s and built the line with light rail
the sd9s were numbered 101, the brand new unit
and #X-100
we see #X-100 in a mixed manifest headed into Craigsville at percisely 10:00 eastern standord time

Sitting at the gas station we see #X-100 droping off her train and then moving on to the next town

At the corner of Craigsville Road and Bottom Creek Road we see #X-100 leaving town up a slight grade ..... (to be)
