UP has MANY SD70Ms with flared radiators.

True...at the risk of being called a nitpicker, I would like to point out that SD 70M's are not SD 70MAC's. They have DC motors, not AC motors. Externally, they don't look much different, except for the lightning stripe and lettering on the side of the MAC's. Internally, however, it's another ballgame. For some applications, AC traction is superior to DC traction. It also costs more. That's why some railroads, like Norfolk Southern, decided they really didn't need AC power and stuck primarily with DC's. The SD70 MACe's were an interim variant. The flared radiators were introduced to accommodate split cooling for tier 2 environmental standards. After a remodelling, the next set of SD 70's were called ACe's. I guess EMD didn't like the MACe moniker. :)
