Na....

 Your right Michael, when Dick Dilworth designed the first "F" units, there were no geeps....

According to the Historic compilation of Trains Magazine articles featuring EMD called "Our GM Scrapbook," by David P. Morgan, F-Means Freight!

If you want to know the History of EMD up to the second generation of Diesel-electric locomotives, here is a beautiful place to start.

Also included, is a chapter on how EMD built locomotives.

Actually, the FT, was designated Freight, was also available with passenger gearing, but was initially designed for freight, some western roads found the E units less than desirable for use in mountainous areas, and prefered F units, when the F3 was introduced, it also was available with gearing that allowed for passenger train speeds, but was also offered with steam generators.

Either way, the Warbonnet paint was generally reserved for passenger service.
