He probably tweaks the environmental settings in his routes. Things like ambient color, sun color, etc., all make a difference. Check it out if you have some time to kill. You can really do some cool things with it...

There was very little time for a person who should not be trespassing on railroad property anyway to set up the camera to catch this moderately sized freight train with a 2-10-0 steam engine on the point.

Later on that day, the freight train now has a P-4 Pacific on the rear ahead of the caboose, which normally operated in passenger service , paired up with the 2-10-0 decapod despite the lack of grades for now.
