The train i was on a couple of weeks ago, arriving at BWI heading North. Like my train it begun its journey 30mins late, will undergo two emergency brake applications and have at least 3 passengers running up and down the train swearing about how they now cant get off until Trenton because of the rush of passengers getting on at Philadelphia. It will arrive in New York 1.5 hours late. haha :)

Haha, average NEC trip ^^. I have a similar story, i travelled with NER 147 and 171 from Boston to washington a few weeks ago :p

On a cold drizzly morning, SP 4-10-2 5018 with a loaded extra reefer train comes down from Tehachapi with the brakes smoking.

GADDAMNIT!!! Ya know know what lilb, Im sending you the bills to get my lower Jaw reattached. Gosh darn it man. well brb, off to the hospital.... Again!

Those arnt smoking brakes from what I remember. Those would be hot boxes caused by low lubricated bearings. Because of this issue, railroads swithed to roller bearings which dont require high maintenance and dont combust into flames.

cast iron brake shoes heat up and smoke. it isnt hotboxes.

Yep, that's right. It is the oil that leaks from the journal boxes onto the wheels that then gets heated up by the brake shoes and smokes. You may also see trains today that will smoke if they go over a flange lubricator while the brakes are applied and the wheels are hot.

Poor bentrain, just can't get a break! But don't drop any more freaking gevos on my head, I still can't find my spleen from the last time.
Oh, we'll see. Maybe two gevos will whip you into shape, or crush your very existence into nothingness. Well theres a first for everything.

I got super GEVOS, man, instead of diesel they got jet fuel, they'll probably blow a turbo and either A. blow your silly little jet out of the sky, or B. combust like a a tracker missile and blow your jet out of existence.
