I wouldn't call it ugly, although it's an opinion that I'm sure some people share. I think I would call it more utilitarian though.

UP 844 is a pretty nice engine imo. There's one available at TrainzItalia, but that's the only available model afiak.
ANLs FEFs are really good but no longer available unfortunately.
