NKP 765 has been known to run passenger trains without a diesel for HEP. Often Railroads will require a diesel to be run on point for safety reasons. That way their engineer can drive the train, he knows the route & such. The few RRs that let steamers on point, have a regular steamer crew (like UP's) which can run the engine with a line-certified driver.

As for HEP. I believe most steam excursion cars have generators or a generator car for power.

Thanks guys! The engine in question is a shop-built BW9 'mcnugget' as was said. 900 horsepower with twin detroit diesel engines.

Could you tell me what the coach is in knifeswitches pictures? Is it something he made, or has it been released somewhere?
