Nope! French spelling. Some box cars have CanadiAn, some have CanadiEn. I suspect it is alternate spelling in either side of every car, but not certain on that...

Yes indeed. I am 90% certain though that the spelling does not alternate on the car itself; rather, a car would either be 'French' and have the en spelling on both sides or English with the an on both. I don't know what determines it...perhaps when they were painting the cars, a quota of them had to be spelled in French?

Aye, French people use simple logic, when you think of the word Canadian, the A sounds like an E, so instead of doing it the English spelling way, they put an E in place of the A..

I am sure there is a bit more to it than that, but that is the most likely simple explanation..

From the French I do know, I would say that it has less to do with logic and more based on their own pronunciation rules. I would argue that the "ian" sound is not common at all in French, whereas the ien sound is much more common. The pronunciation of Canadian in English is what most English speaking people generally know, however the French pronunciation is noticeably different. For those who are curious/bored

As an Canadian English major, I couldn't resist, sorry.

Great pics as always all!
