Upgrade Advice Needed

Ok fine you win...
Win what? It wasn't a matter of winning anything.

The 400 GTX series isn't really much different in size compared to the “previous” 200 series, compared to the 9400GT yes there is a difference.

The GTS 450 from Tigerdirect has been ordered.

I have done business with them in the past, my current system's parts where purchased from their outlet store in Durham, NC.

If gas was a little cheaper I'd do a road trip and have it now, but I guess I'll survive the ordeal of waiting for the great brown truck.

2 to 7 days.:'( ... Then :) .

... Waits a few seconds ....

Is it too soon to check tracking? :hehe:

TS2010 only use two cores so a quad core won't buy you much.

the 9400 GT is not at the top of the list so you can get some idea of how much improvement you might get.

Win 7 upgrade to 64 bit would you you more up to date drivers plus allow TS2010 to use more than 2 gigs of memory.

Cheerio John

64 bit Win 7 is out of the question for this computer.

My ancient (but still very functional) MS Force Feedback steering wheel which is absolutely needed for me to play Nascar Racing 2003 is only barely supported with 32 bit XP.

No new steering wheel is in the budget till this one stops working or I build a new rig which will have 64 bit Win 7.

This thread has led to what I believe is the most cost effective upgrade compromise, spend as little as possible today (yet still get a good kick in performance) and save for tomorrow.

The most cost effective way to boost performance with any CPU dependent game is by overclocking the CPU, which of course is free.

You'll have to post some results/screens shots of the performance increase when you get around to it. Before the upgrade and after would be great.

I've gotten it to overclock from 2.33 to 2.68 ghz, gonna try and bump it up some more.

I plan on doing a before and after test. If I understand correctly, when I minimize the game with the windows key the number shown is frames per second? With and without overclocking will also be included. 4 tests, same route, same session with a cold boot prior to each test.

Then the wisdom/folly of the plan will be revealed for all to marvel/ridicule.:hehe:

I would just use Fraps.

Pick some default scenarios and match the camera positions with the screen shots for the comparison. Be sure to mention the resolution used and AA.

processor is just fine no need to oc but just change your graphics card and get minimum gtx 250 r above

So how's getting at the minimum a GTX 250 or above going to help a CPU dependent game like Trainz without touching the CPU?

So you're suggesting that the GPU is totally irrelevant? I would have thought that since TS2010 puts more work down to the GPU a balance would be reasonable. I accept that Direct X 9 games depend more on the cpu than Direct x 11 games and sims.

In reference to the double slot cards in the 400 series my 460gtx needs 9-1/2" to 10" of space including the two 6 pin power cables for the card depending on the type of cables on the PSU.

over 50's club....mr Quad Core ME TOO

I'm running a Duo Core and CPUs are 45 to 50% with 2010ee...I'll up date My Cormputter this winter....do you guys think I should upload one of those fishlipsatwork dem's I've been working on..which would really test any machine?

ie..see what you have to have in power to run a monster route, without the flicker?

BTW...if you want me to upload a monter route to test your configuration......you have to explaine me how to upload. to DLS.

Totally irrelevant, no, not if you want good image quality that only high resolution and a good dose of AA can provide.

With any primarily CPU dependent game the CPU is always obviously going to have the greatest impact on performance.

That all depends on how much the game engine uses the features available to the developer with that particular version of DirectX. Just because DirectX 9 might have had certain features that the GPU could have taken advantage of doesn't mean the game engine was written to use them.
