Update 99912. What is in it?

For performance feedback, can I please ask for some quantitative comparisons (if you have the old build still installed). For reference, we're seeing some machines much faster (50 > 100fps), some slower (55 > 45), others unchanged.

It would also be good to know if a particular setting makes things worse. Also when taking comparisons, ensure your launcher and in-game settings are identical, as well as camera position etc.

I'm testing now and will have more definitive a side-by-side comparison in a bit. On this particular route, I barely see above 30 fps anyway. I will say that my Trainz-Plus version is a clone of what I refer to as the production version. The only differences betwen the route I'm testing is the portals were removed and replaced with turn loops on the test version. Outside of that the route is still the same, and so are the settings.

There is definitely a difference in loading. The environment loading screen drags into place on 99912 with the grass appearing first followed by other scenery items then the preview locomotive.

On the production version, the loading screen doesn't show the scenery bits loading, however, there is no image then everything appears at once.

I have found something of interest.

On my retail build 98592, tree detail slider is set to Normal because anything higher causes poor framerates and awful stutters in driver.

On the previous build of Trainz-Plus, I was able to set the tree detail slider up to High an the performance was the same as it was in Build 98592 at Normal.

In Build 99912, this is not the case. With the Tree detail slider set to High, the program becomes a slideshow, and setting the slider back to Normal is a bit slower, meaning more stutters, than what the current retail build (98592) achieves.

Performance Settings in both programs:

1080 x 1024 (windowed)
Vsync = none

Shadow quality: High
Main shadow resolution: 4096
Shader Quality: Ultra
Texture detail: Normal
Post processing: High
Water Quality: High
Detail Scener: Clutter + TurfFX
Antialiasing: 8x
Detail update rate: High
Checked Process objects behind camera (PhysX simulation is unchecked).

In Game settings:

Process Objects Behind Camera: Checked
Draw Distance: 8000m
Scenery Detail: Normal
Tree Detail: Normal
Post Processing: High

Actual frame rate comparisons using the same route in both cases:

Build 98592:
At the launcher and then the program menu after starting : 63 fps

In cab view on a very built-up route.

Start: 38.2 external view.

These are internal cab looking out:

18 fps
42.6 fps
and dropping to as low as 15.7 fps in the worst place. (I am investigating the content in this area still).
30.5 fps.
Then as high as 50 fps, but drops again to 14.7 as the content gets busy in station and yard areas then returns to previous settings.

Build 99912:

At the launcher and then the program menu after starting : 196 fps

Out of cab in detailed area: 30.2 fps
In cab looking out: 20.5
Solid 25.6 (no 42.6 spurt)
Drop to 14.2 with stutters
16.9 where 15.7 is
jumps back and forth between 16 and 18 fps in same area where Build 98512 is at a solid 18 fps. This does cause stutters where Build 98512 does not have any.

Just for kicks, I ran the same route again in this version with Trees set to High instead of Normal.

The frame rates are the same or a tiny bit lower, but the performance is worse with the trees on High instead of Normal.

So where is the pick-list and saved search utility?

I think it's missing, but I could be confused and not looking in the right place.

Thanks for the detailed report John. We're investigating the fps variations. Generally it appears that fps is higher when trees aren't around, lower when they are (although this is also hardware dependent).

Thank you Tony. I was pretty tired when I was searching for that.

I'm glad my report helped. The hardware is okay, meaning an Intel i7 Extreme 6930 with a GTX1080Ti. My video settings are vanilla. I don't do anything fancy with my hardware.

I've noticed too that the frame rates can be steady and still the same, but there are stutters with lots of trees or trees on the High setting.
