ok ..........kris you go march right into the shop foreman's office and demand that they repaint all the old SP units! he tells you to go home and he will call in a few days. a week later he calls you into the office , then he hands you a stack of papers , all estimates on labor, and materials, paint ,primer, tape, paper ect. est time to degrease wipe down and wash each prime mover. now we need to either sandblast or D A the entire unit down to metal and or the primerbase . next repair holes/dents ect. next wipe down the whole thing with tack cloth....ok ready for primer...2 coats of acid etch green death. let dry 48 hours ...ok..now lets apply the first coat of the base color. let dry 24 hours.apply 2nd coat of base color . let dry 24 hours next mask off and apply colors to grab irons and so on . now mask off and paint or apply the graphics decals. ....est time on each 7 days . on the bottom of the last page it states if you supply the parts labor and paint as well as a shop to perform the above actions they will charge you $1000.00 dollars a day for keeping a working money making locomotive out of service

hey bunkerratmk2 you forgot all the epa forms and heaven forbid if they paint in california, all the paper work involved with the use of paint and waste .

This is a bad place to put this but since you seem to know.. Say; Norfolk southern, is the horsehead logo a Decal; or is a a cut out placed up to the engine and the white air brushed in?

Seriously, I see it like this. The less I see of a particular paint scheme or road engine, the more precious it is for me to capture in video and picture. And the railroads are a business. Always have and always will be. If you want to save a particular paint scheme, either buy the unit or paint a different unit on a preserved railway.

Well, their not going to give these units the American flag, I can say that much.

Kris,
I think you should have refrained from posting this. It's obvious have haven't taken the time to see things from a railroads point of view. I'm still mad that people keep updating posts about how many Conrail units are left and how horrid NS is for painting them. How people should document them... It's business. Take the blue, and give me black. Take the bloody nose, and put a shield on it. Business is business, and until you can recognize it, you will never be a content railfan. Content railfans don't hate railroads for such choices. They pick and choose favorites based on policies they enforce, the way the manage and run their railroad. How they clean up and do what their supposed to do: transport. Because when it comes down to it, the only thing those locomotives were built to do, was to pull freight. And not matter what, that unit will always be ex-SP, and will always pull freight until the day it's retired.

That's my ranting. I suggest you take the time to read it instead of scrolling past it.

Cheers,
Joshua

Well I resent the fact that I can't get any unpatched SP power in California. So I guess the Midwest will be calling because in all the YouTube videos, most of the unpatched power is out there.

Well, you are going to have to deal with it... I live out in tracy and we on occasion get a patched road unit going by on a haul (Last one I remember was about a week or two ago). We used to have a gp40 out here on the local crew, but that got snatched up a few years back and replace with a SW switcher sp unit (both patched). The worked with a UP GP15 and soon they both disappeared all together. We currently still have the 15, but it works with a new 38, yet I happy to have the old beaten up 15. It sound spectacular, there is nothing like the sound of that thing reving up to shove cars down the line. Do I miss the SP units? yes. But its all part of the experience, not havign them always makes it more special when you do see them. And even if they are a bit rough, I love the weathered look, makes them look rough and tough. As for the patch? really? who cares? The unit is still there, and that is good enough for me.

Now if you will excuse me, Ive got an Ex CNW Gp15 California Nothern to catch doing some work with a brand new Genset, To catch (Imagine that image in your head) Its probably one of the weirdest combos I've seen and its all local Tracy baby!

cheers

Ah, don't let that bother you! Come on Kris. You should be proud that they are still being used at all! You should visit the Mid West sometime anyway. A lot of great rail lines. Especially if you end up coming near Chicago. You'll never go without a train. Shame that Illinois isn't a better state than it is. lol Anyway, just railfan UP like all the Conrail fans railfan NS. Go out, and join the Southern Pacific Historical Society and try to keep a positive attitude towards a railroad that's just doing what their supposed to do; transportation of goods. (like UP)

See, I can post a nice comment.

Cheers,
Joshua

what part of SOUTHERN PACIFIC is gone don't you understand ? what is there to resent? as for the "uinpatched" the power no longer belongs to S P, it 's gone remember
UNION PACIFIC owns the units ..say it slowly ...UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD.....it's a paint job on a locomotive nothing more nothing less.

I understand that. What part of I want to see some unpatched SP units and maybe get a chance to ride in one do you NOT UNDERSTAND?

Thought for the day

If there is a direct relationship between business viability and the condition of the corporate paintwork, what conclusion can be reached from the fact that N3V have so recently re-painted the Forum?

Casper,
It's more of an upgrade... given this is 4.1.10. Perhaps they have been doing better in business. (yay for advertising)

What the point we're trying to make is that UP is it's own company. It accuired the locomotives through purchase, and therefore UP owns those locomotives. From a railfan's perspective, the thought of re-painting them would be horrifying, but the truth is that it 1. removes the weathered, old look of the engine, making it a better look for public relations, 2. Fixes/ covers rust spots that would normally leave a locomotive looking decayed. 3. It is simply not viable for UP to keep every locomotive in the same paint as they bought it in, for various reasons. Ofcourse, someone should perserve a couple locomotives for the sake of perserving history, but UP would be losing money if they were the ones to do it. UP, like any other railroad in the US is a COPORATION. They are in the buisness for the sole purpose of making money. Don't hate UP for doing this, hate the fact the everyone in the world lives to make money...

And I want to see some unpatched Rock Island units in road service.

What a bummer.

At the expense of others money I might add.

What money have others lost in the Union Pacific Corporation Kris? Because now your just making absolutely no sense. Your basically saying the railroad is stealing peoples money.
