UK Screenshots (Hi Res Version)

In Yorkshire

nowadays headges are used more for resedential places. Walls are used more than hedges in frams as they take up less room as due to the lack of roots in walls more land can be used for crops etc.

phil

This may be true in Yorkshire and all stations north, but not in southern/western England where hedges and fencing is more common place and walls are not used much at all.
It really depends on what is available locally and oop north where stone is, then you get walls, usually I think, dry stone ones. The northern routes always tend to look a bit barren to me....

But here in the deep south (ya'all) then it's a different matter. Not much stone lying around so fences and hedges come into their own.
Go west and you may well see a balance of walls, fences and hedges.
It just amounts to district - where you are in the UK, and who said 'uk' or even 'yuk', it's GB, Great Britain, always was when I was at school.

Using the AJS station kits will bring your tracks closer together too. Just a thought.

32 degrees is lovely weather, wish we had it now. Can't wait till summer time.:)

Question to all the British folks, when would you use a hedge instead of the stone walls in a route?? So far, in the route I'm putting together, I've not used a hedge yet just all stone walls. Have them all alongside the tracks, around crops and farms. Where should I change to hedges, around residential areas, cottages, small farms??.

Thanks folks.

Lincolnshire is mostly fences and hedges. Hedges as in lines of small to large trees, which are probably overgrown hedges.

Check out Geograph.org.uk to see, in part, the whole of the British Isles. Also look at maps.live.com for aeriel views, which in some places are three dimensional.

That is a fantastic storm! How on earth did you do it?

:)
If I can remember, the clouds are called "pommie sky 08" (as they say in Australia)
:p
and are available on the DLS, and the lightning on the first picture and raindrops on the lens on the second picture were all done on Photoshop - it's a shame that the weather isn't this realistic on the actual game!

I haven't seen this in any other area except the Guildford area in Surrey, but hedgerows are usually used behind the spiked fences on our local line. As other people have said, dry stone walls usually start to appear when you hit Derbyshire, Yorkshire, the hilly bits of Cheshire and a little bit of Staffordshire - but I reckon a mix of the lot would look quite nice
:D

This is called 'Hedge 15 Spline' and before the fence was put in the hedge was given several random spline points so that it could be pulled to varying heights to create a non-uniform hedge as those which surround other than residential areas.

A bit more from up 'North'.

How many old abandoned castles would there be in the British countryside, are they a common sight??

Maybe off in the distance surrounded by bushes and grasslands?

They are certainly common in Scotland.

Since these shots, I've screened the depot from the road, with billboards. Methinks I need to shift the diesel tanks, as the H&SE wouldn't approve of them being that close, but there isn't a more suitable site.

The station is a terminus, which requires the loco to runaround the train. It thinks about it for about 10 times and then runs around and couples up. I might make it a through station eventually, but it's already a 400 baseboard run from end to end.

@escafeld

Really nice piccies, just a quick question on the buildings you have used, are they all on the DLS? Especially the MPD and Wagon Shops?

Nathan

Good question @Napalm, I'd never thought about that when I agreed to give out the info. The MPD is 'Engine Shop 1 stall' kuid:38408:28001 by VMD

By wagon shop/s, do you mean the very large building? If so, 'Scrap Metal Processing Building' kuid:2:124017:10032: Both US content.

Thanks for the comment, btw.

Go for it.. there are plenty in the UK and scotland, it just so happens you have one in view on your route :p Would be no issue unless you had a ton of castles ;)

Some good bits here for making a castle of your choice: -

kuid:68236:23083 & 23092 - 23099 for the walls and towers and kuid:70030:38108 'side wall rock' for the spline.

Looking for some help myself, please.

This FMA grass doesn't show until you get up close and then it springs into view. Is there any cure for that, other than don't use it.

Not showing on the far bank

Ok, a bit further up the line from when I last posted shots. Class 24 leads a passenger train through the countryside.

I sort of feel funny posting shots as I hope they look British enough.:hehe:

More soon hopefully. I've laid down 10 boards to start with, it is likely that I will add more. I've detailed and textured two large areas now, so progressing well at this stage. I am one who gets burned out easily though, I try to keep my routes small to combat that. Hopefully that won't happen and I'll have a route that I can release to the DLS. Hmmm, I haven't uploaded a route in over 12 months I think.

Nice looking route, I like the use of the Lothian bus reskin!

Re. the grasses, we've had the same trouble while building the Deltic Preservation Society routes. Some of the grasses display this problem, some don't.

The guidance given was to use the S11 range A to T set and JVC (M) for large areas- I've not used this particular range myself so I can't confirm but try one out and see if it makes a difference for you. EDIT: I've checked the route I'm building, the main grass I'm using next to the line is JVC (M) 2g- this one definitely is OK.

HTH.

Hello Col, your screenies look excellent, your little route is coming along very nicely, the only thing I noticed was that your cars are on the wrong side of the road, don't forget, us Brits drive on the left......:p

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

How do you change it, cos I've tried changing the region to 'UK" and still the cars are driving on the wrong side.

I really don't want to abandon this route because the cars are on the wrong side, please someone tell me how to change them so they are on the correct side??

There, the cars are fixed folks. Happy now??:p

And thanks Whistlehead, I used the Australian kuid since we also drive on the left side.
