UK Screenshots (Hi Res Version)

Truly excellent WEN, love those resistor banks, bit of a tight squeeze under there ! Restoration work on the preserved unit is now back underway after the move & sorting of the many spares we have.
This is the back end of the trailer coach with the framework exposed for the first time in 72 years.

Most of it was pure guesswork, as I couldn't find many closeups. I did however, get some idea from the photos. The trouble is, its now over 120k polys for that car (The resistor banks add 45k each!) Hence the static rendering, so don't expect the effect to look that spectacular. I might release a special high poly version for those that love the detail, if Railworks and Trainz can both take it. In theory, they both should as there is nothing stopping the exporters from freaking out... the game engines no doubt willl and I wonder how my newest PCs will cope with it, considering they weren't built for power, but repeated drops, sand, water and other nasties suvival that most laptops can't take, including my good old friends, coke and dr Pepper! Yes, I am a bit more paranoid about my laptops at the moment, but I've always wanted a toughbook, at least I should have a better chance of my meshes surviving anything.

Wow! That looks rotten as hell, the lower parts look ok, unless you get to the bottom, but the window surrounds look awlful. Firstly, what is the situation with asbestos like? Secondly, how easy (or not) was it to take away the panels?

The rot around the window frames is bad due to water ingress, these need to be replaced first, luckily not too serious structurally. The rest of the framework is remarkably sound. There is no asbestos present in the bodywork, but some in the guards compartment of the DMBS. The panels where cut out in sections, these had been spot welded to the frames & sprang back straight after removal, despite being curved for over 70 years

I don't think it was 70 years, but more like 30 years at least (as Horwich works or whether they went, may of needed to remove the panels for Asbestos removal for example), but sound framework is quite something, considering the time its been out exposed to the elements. Spot welding is also a bit of a surprise as well. I would of thought they would of used another method to weld the panels together.

Inside or outside panels? Generally, the asbestos was removed with the inside panels removed from memory.

There was an article in the railway gazette supplement of Feb 1940 that describes the outer panels being spot welded to the frame. Considering the all the effort it takes to remove the outer panels, its unlikely they have been removed before. There is evidence on both coaches of patch repairs though.

I was more thinking of if they had to remove the panels for corrsion issues, which possibly if the work was to be done around the same time, asbestos removal. Unless I am thinking a bit too far ahead, I.e. they were disposed of with asbestos contamination as well. (YIKES!)

I don't think you will need to worry to much about a poly count of 120k with good set of LOD. I've got a funny feeling that the Auran Duchess addon pack locos are around that mark as well.
