Tunnels being by-passed on Cajon Pass?

Just found this picture looking for bridges, although it increases height limits isn't it a waste of money?

I thought they did this a couple of years back to add a second track.

this is a picture from Cajon Pass around 2007 when they were adding the third track. This is tunnel 1. I was out there back in 2006 when they were working on it and remember I was only half as tall as the tires of the Dump trucks they were using! They were daylighted, and if you look on google images you should be able to find some current pics.

Looking at the size of the tunnel and the size of the rock it goes through you'd think it would have been easier in the long run to just blast the entire rock down to ground level and keep the second track in normal alignment. No tunnel, no sharp curves, etc.

This was a shoofly around the tunnel. It was daylighted and the track realigned to be more normal

They had no choice traffic is very heavy on this route and the other track was needed.
