TS2009 not backwards compat to TS2006

Hi all;
I did some experimenting with TS2009 Beta-1 and TS2006, and have found that a route built in TS2006, imported into TS2009 and modified there will not run in TS2006 any longer.
When I tried to open the route in Surveyor, I get an error message saying that there is no mapfile loaded.

I don't know if this is only the beta issue, or that TS2009 is not going to be backwards compatible.
Note that I did not add any TS2009 content to the route while it was open there, so IMO, TS2006 should still be able to open/run the route.

Further note:
Transdem Trainz edition is NOT compatible with TS2009.
A route created with Transdem will not open in TS2009. Get error "Map is missing or damaged"

No surprise there. Were you really expecting this to work? You can't load a TRS2006 into TRS2004 either.

I guess I was hoping it would work. Good thing I didn't do much in the way of mods to my route in 2009, since it would be a huge loss to lose the route in 2006, since I created it in Transdem, and need to place UTM tiles onto the route for detailing.

I decided to purchase TS2009 mainly because I was curious, and wanted to get into the Beta testing program.
I should not be looking to build a real route in 2009 just yet, since it's just a Beta! That's dangerous<g>

Paul:

It is very easy to bring a TRS2006 route back into TRS2004 provided that NO 2006 built-ins were used for the route. Email me and I'll tell you how.

Thanks for the offer, but should I wish to do such a thing (which I don't) I'd search the Forum to find out how. The point is it can't be done directly (TRS2006 to TRS2004). I'd expect that TS2009 to something earlier will not be possible at all due to the number of changes and new features.

FW,

I hope you had a back-up of your route. I would have worked with a copy so the original is still intact just in case things get broken in the transition to the new version.

As Paul says, there are a lot of changes in TRS2009 in comparison to TRS2006 and TRS004. This would probably explain why TranzDem does not work and why TRS2006 can't read the new map file. You may have not "touched" the file yourself, but the program made internal changes when it imported the file to the new version.

Routes created in any previous version of Trainz should run in TS2009 but there is seldon any way to go backwards. File formats change, new features are added and so the new version is needed. Its the same for an Office 2007 doc which won't open in 2003.

Hopefully Roland aka GeoPhil will be updating Transdem to work with TRS2009, as it's really an essential utility for prototype based routes. Although I downloaded the 009 beta I haven't had much time to look at it due to other distractions but I plan on purchasing the full version and hope to develop in it.

For now, I guess the best compromise would be to produce a Transdem base route in 004 or 006 as now then cdp/export for import into 009. You won't have the finer terrain detail but at least you can apply the other 009 improvements to it.

Roland is waiting for Auran to release the documentation for maps in TS2009 so it won't be long. And yes you can go TransDEM to TSR2006 to TS2009 just fine. Just save the map at least once in TRS2006.

My hope is that Roland is able to do some magic with TransDEM so that only the baseboards with track are 5m. A Dem based map of all 5m baseboards would be a framerate killer. There is no reason to use the 5m grid on background baseboards. But that being said I'm sure someone will try and then spend the next year cussing Auran in this forum for how slow TS2009 runs.

Yes that is a good point William - kind of like the "Distant Mountains" feature in MSTS (which I could never get to work!).
