TS12 and dual graphics cards...

what's the verdict (if there is one) on running SLI or ATI Crossfire for TS12?
Is it beneficial?

Also, is it TS12 that can only utilize up to 2 cores?

thanks!

There were test done quite a while back can't remember if it was TS6 or TS9 & in most cases I think better results were obtained in single card setup.
I tested with both single & sli setup & allocating single & multi core CPU & the results I got were basically the same for either setup.
From memory I think I got better results on a single card & left everything else as per default setup.
Since then I now only use 1 card & the only option I use is screen res.

johnwhelan set up the tests back then he may still have a kink to the results

Running TS12 on a 4 core processor I get 2 cores really busy and the other 2 cores not doing so much.

That's not to say 4 cores doesn't help. It leaves 2 cores to run background OS stuff.

Never tried SLI, so no thoughts there.

I don't have TS12 but going on my knowledge of how things work the dual graphic cards normally need a special driver and I don't think TS12 is mainstream enough for one to be developed. I'd go single graphics card at the moment.

Currently I've seen TS2010 use 8 cores when in Content Manager, I suspect it could use more, in Surveyor and Driver I suspect it uses one thread (core) for running the game display and one for the AI side etc. My expectation would be that they will attempt to add threads as dual processors with hyperthreading and quad processors become more mainstream.

Intel has some very good optimising compilers which will optimise code for Intel processors so I suggest that an Intel quad wouldn't be a bad choice but currently a dual core would give the same performance but be slightly cheaper.

At the high end much has been said about the benefits of SSDs and if you have money then these might give a better return in performance terms than a second graphics card.

I've got dual Nvidia 460 GTX cards using drivers from about six months ago. In SLI mode I get visible tearing on some polygons when I rotate the viewpoint using the cursor keys. Using a single card for TS12 everything is perfect. I don't notice any frame rate difference.
