TS10 vs TS12

Still here... lurking
I have trainz 2 pack and I already installed 2009, but I'm thinking of installing trainz 2010. Should I or shouldn't I? On the other hand, is TS12 better than TS10? Sorry if I'm being a forum chatterbox.

If you already have TS2010, why not install it and see?

Overall, I'd say TS2010 is excellent. It would be a tough call to say whether TS2010 or TS12 wins the award for the best train sim I've seen, though I lean a little towards TS2010 for stability reasons. But it's not like you can only have one version on your computer: indeed, you can have as many copies of each as you can fit on your hard disk.

Ok, so it is installed, but when I tried importing content I got TONS of error warnings. They said that "This trainz version does not support installation of 3rd party content", and ALL of the built in trains, yes, ALL OF THEM, reported missing dependencies. Any Help?

I would start with getting the games registered to your account now. While doing that, let the game do an extended database repair (via content manager, top left menu). That way the game will "learn" where to find what.

back to the TS10 vs. TS12 debate:

TS10
1. more routes and trains
2. less bugs
3. runs smoothly
4. no DRM

TS12
1. too many bugs
2. less content
3. easier for beginners
4. multiplayer
5. DRM

overall, it's a tie for me.

Well, I registered it, as you can see, and I am doing an EDR right now. TS12 has a Doppler effect, whereas TS10 does not. So it does not sound realistic. I have FSX on my computer and TS10 runs fine on a certain camera angle. If you want to view from the ground, it goes super slow. 2009 runs like a champion, but 2010 runs super slow, but in order to make it go faster, I have to zoom in.:confused:

I moved a route that I developed (lots of DLS content, no self-made content) from TS2010 to TS12 after it came out and too much was broken, so I kept using TS2010. A year later I tried again and almost all of the broken asssets had been fixed.

Here are a few reasons why I think TS12 is the best Trainz ever:
1. Doppler effect.
2. The same route (the one I built) ran smoother in TS12.
3. TS 12 has zoom-out to mini-map, plus an intermediate view between the regular view and mini-map.
4. In TS12, mini-map shows water where it really is, whereas in previous versions your water areas had to be textured first.
5. The issue in TS2010 where sometimes two sessions would have the same name in routes/sessions has been fixed.

TS2010 was the best all round version but a couple of things to consider when weighing up whether to go TS12. Firstly a considerable amount of new content is now being released at TS12 level - my last three route releases have been for that version. It probably goes without saying that if you're buying Trainz with a view to content creation, the best chance of (hopefully) painless forward transition into T:ANE is going to be through TS12. And while it grieves me to say it (having reverted back to 49922) with that in mind you probably need to be developing in 61388 (SP1 HF4). Also don't forget most of the built in content from TS2010 (but not the routes) was uploaded by N3V to the DLS so can be freely downloaded into TS12.

Here's a list of pros and cons based on my experiences with both:

TS12:
Pros:
  • Multiplayer
  • Doppler
  • Newer routes such as Mojave Sub and Northeast Corridor
  • Most newly released routes are TS12-only, so can be used
Cons:
  • I cannot get it to run with decent frames on my system on build 49922 or SP1 HF4
  • Lacks compatibility mode
TS2010:
Pros:
  • Also has Multiplayer
  • Compatibilty mode is included
  • You can have a multiplayer build, a non-multiplayer build with compatibility mode, or both, installed at the same time (giving you the best of both worlds)
  • Runs extremely well on my system. I get 60fps on routes like ECML and Avery-Drexel
  • Includes a wider range of content
Cons:
  • Multiplayer is a seperate patch, not an included feature
  • No doppler effect
  • Routes built in TS12 aren't backdatable
  • Not many people use TS2010's Multiplayer due to the feature being in TS12
  • Said wider range of content is mostly older '06 content with a few newer pieces such as ECML thrown in
  • Newer DLC such as the Nickel Plate set is not able to be used in TS2010

I myself would choose TS2010 over TS12, because I can run it very well on my system.

Just my 5 cents. :)

Kieran.
