TRS2009 in an XP window

I've tried some of the suggestions made here for running in a window, but they don't seem to work on my system.

I've edited the trainzoptions.txt file to no avail. What am I missing?

Trainz has never run good in a window.

whitepass is correct that Trainz wont give the best performance in Windowed mode but I use it for testing purposes while modeling.

You can use most any height/width that your computer is capable of.

Take out
-fullscreen

Add with your preferred h/w and position
-Height=900
-Width=1440
-Windowed
-WindowPosX=0
-WindowPosY=0

Is it possible to make this scalable? I have a dual monitor setup and I very often do work on the second monitor while I'm running a simulation game on the first, I've been able to make this game run in a window using these settings, but then I can't "maximize" the window, something which I always do with other simulations...

Just go into Options from Launch.
Untick full screen puts you into windowed mode. I get good FPS when in SLI mode.
Wide range of resolutions in dropdown menu cover various aspect ratio screens and dual monitor.

There is no need to modify the trainzoptions.txt file

It works good for me as well, but I can't "maximize" the window, meaning that if its set to 1440X900 I can't make it take the full 1680X1050 and still be able to use the other screen. If I've got it set to 1680X1050, it just defaults to fullscreen (even with "fullscreen" unchecked) and if I click on anything on the other monitor it minimizes the game. I'm trying to get around this, as I really want to be able to use my other monitor while I'm running a session.

I think you need to go into nvidia control panel
Setup multiple displays
dualview or horizontal span
then vary your resolution to get what you want.

Try this:

Trainz window cannot be maximised. Its set at the resolution you choose in Options.
If trainz res=nvidia display res then it is full screen.
If you select a trainz res < nvidia then it is windowed.
If you select a trainz window > nvidia it is limited to full window.

If in nvidia span mode Trainz will span both displays if 2xhoriz and can be moved around if this is less than nvidia 2xhoriz x vert.

As I type this post I'm on second screen with Railyard windowed on the other. Screen res is 1280 x 960 on both screens with Trainz window at 1024 x 768. No minimising occurring.

I actually have a ATI HD 4870 X2, though its got many of the controls of the Nvidia stuff. I'm wondering what the resolution of maximized window is in 1680X1050 native resolution. I've gotten used to running everything windowed since I got the second monitor (I personally prefer fullscreen, but I need to be able to use the second screen constantly), but I can't stand running smaller than maximized windows...

As has already been said, for TS2009 to run in windowed mode is actually very easy. Just untick 'fullscreen', and set the screen res lower than your main screen resolution

This works just fine... except that you then cannot "maximize" (make the window fill the screen) the Trainz window. I am already running it at 1440X900 in a window, but I want the whole screen filled.

PS: I get better frames and less stutters running in a window than in fullscreen... seems odd based on what's already been said

Take a look at Lenny's post again. By setting the resolution in the trainzoptions.txt file as he suggested you can set the screen size you want. This setting over rides the choices on the options>display setting screen. I'm not sure if it will get the aspect ratio correct but it is the closest you can get using the controls available in Trainz. It is still a window but at the size you want. I'm not sure Trainz can be fullscreen in just one monitor. You would have to explore your video card control panel options to see what it can do.
