Trouble with the tutorial

I just got Trainz Simulator 12, and I'm having some trouble with the second part of the tutorial. I'm at the part where you need to load your boxcars, but I can't figure out how to get the palettes to load - I'm not even sure if I'm at the right place. Here's a screenshot. Does anyone know of a video or anything that shows what I'm supposed to do here?

Hi and welcome to Trainz,

We had a lot of trouble with people who got the game illegally. You currently do not have any trainz version registered to your account and as a result, a lot of people will ignore your topic. To fix that, go here:

About your question:
Based on the screenshot, you seem to be in the right location.
It has been ages since I did the tutorial, so I can only give you some basic advise: Please check your games build-number. You can find it in the bottom-right corner of the start-up window. If that number is below 49922, be sure to at least patch your game to that number. Patches can be found here:
http://www.auran.com/servicepacks/
Patches have to "connect"; they need to start with your current build-number. If that is not available, you can not patch.

Hope that helps for now. Good luck and be sure to register your game to your account.

I registered my game, thanks for the tip!
I can't find any relevant patches, though. I'm on build 61297. I have the game on Steam, so I assume that it would keep it up to date for me.
I'm also currently updating the game's assets ("Download Content Updates" in the main menu) to see if that helps at all.

Do I have to do something in one of the context menus? I noticed that if I ctrl+right click on a boxcar there is a "Load" option, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

You have the latest steam build so you are ok in that respect.
According to your picture, you may need to pull up a little further (to get two cars to load simultaneously).
The first box car should be close to the end of the loading dock.
Moving the train back and forth a few times, you will eventually find the best place to stop.
I had to do this tutorial 2 or 3 times before I got it right.

Edit: You don't need to do anything. If you stop at the right spot, the cars load automatically.
You can right click to get the status of the car, whether it is loaded or unloaded.
I just did this tutorial again and everything works as expected.
