Trouble with PEV mesh veiwer

So, last night I decided to try my hand at skinning my own unit using Paint.net (I already have a lot of experience with Paint.net because I've reskinned another game.) and I made a test unit using the tutorial on wikibooks (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz/Tutorial_for_Reskinnng_a_Locomotive_using_Paint.Net) but, after I finished PEV mesh veiwer woulden't open the unit, it said "Couldn't load 'gp38.tga' only 256 colour, 24 bit, and 32 bit TGA supported."
I have no idea what I did wrong, did i not follow the tutorial correctly?
please, someone, help.

Did you do this?
(from the tutorial)

4. Start PEV's Mesh Viewer utility. If necessary, select a file type of Trainz Mesh (*.im, *.pm). Select File / Open, paste the address just copied into the filename box and press Enter. The asset folder will open. Navigate to the location of the .im file (...\gp38 undecorated\gp38undec_body\gp38undec_body.im in this example) and select it. The loco will appear in the viewer.

P.S. I only started reskinning less than a month ago, so I know what you are going through :)

I did, and the original blank gp38 showed up, but after I coloured a few things to test it, then the message appeared.

Did you inadvertently save your TGA file as a compressed image?

Open up and resave uncompressed, and see if that helps.

Once again, I'm using Paint.net, and I'm not sure it has the ability to do that, and I don't have any other software to do that.

The place to check is when you are saving - I know GIMP (and possibly Paint.NET as well) has an option called RLE compression that should be unticked during the saving process for TGA files.

So I looked in paint.net, and (i'm sorry for my ignorance,) and I didn't see anything you were referring to in the save as menu, if possible can you show a picture of where to click, or provide a source for one?

You have to use "Save As..." the first time you save your image to be able to access these settings. You'll get your system explorer popup. Save it as usual there, then you'll get get this popup. Just untick "Compress (RLE)". You can save using the "save" button or CTRL-S from there on.

Hi,

I take the opportunity of this thread to mention a trouble I am facing with Trainz Mesh Viewer.

I frequently make models thumbnails with this soft, but since I replaced my old HD monitor by a 4K one, the thumbnail I get is anything but the model view.
Is there anything to do inside the soft to adapt it to high resolution screens?
