Trouble seeing images loaded to hostthenpost

Screenshots from most of the image hosting sites used here are visible in my browser, except for those from hostthenpost. I get a partial image, showing the top few 'lines' of the image, the rest is a grey rectangle. This has only started happening recently. Browser is IE9. Could an update have changed some setting that causes this? Any suggestions other than the usual chant of 'change to Chrome/Firefox/...Blender (:o)'?

Deane,

I have occasionally had this happen with images from more than one file hosting site. One of the Russian hosting sites was particularly bad for a while, but I've not had a problem recently. I've also had it happen with Imageshack.

Sometimes using the browser toolbar refresh button will cure it. I’ve also clicked RMB over the image and opened the image url link in a new browser tab which sometimes allows access to the full image. The link in the thread then magically seemed to open normally in some instances.

I also noticed that the problem wasn't necessarily down to the file hosting site, but seemed to be linked to the member posting it. Links to the same image hosting site posted by other members opened with no problem. There were one or two threads where, whenever certain members had posted, the whole loading process stalled and hung for ages. I thought at the time it might have been cookie activity with my protection software doing it's stuff, but what do I know!

I've not had a problem recently. I saw your comment in the Nature thread, but couldn't find any troublesome images on any of those pages.

Can you point to a thread/post with an example "faulty" hostthenpost image for others to try out?

I don't have a problem with Firefox 15.0.2 from HTP.com or .org. I despise IE9, my place of work uses it and it's not pleasant, either due to it's construction or due to the blocking protocol in place, probably the latter.

None of those fixes works, they were the first things I tried.

Just one example from the USA screenshots thread is this . Basically any image from hert, jadebullet, H222, deadpoolmx55 (who all use HTP.com) are only partially drawn on screen. From any other site, it's OK.

The images from that link load OK for me, but a little slower than normal, taking around 6 seconds for everything to appear (running through 10.41Mbps connection speed when loading).

Normally the Forum thread pages and images would load instantly, so there does seem to be something amiss.

When I had my image loading problem I left the tab open, and opened another tab to pursue Forum life as normal. I found that the “sticking” tab would eventually open all of the posted images after anything from 4 to 10 minutes. Clearly not a perfect solution, but I was at least able to eventually see the images.

I installed the latest Google Chrome. It has exactly the same problem as IE9 with images from HostThenPost.

So I won't be doing Firefox, this isn't a browser problem.

I have written to HostThenPost about it. We'll see if they have anything to say....

It could be your ISP, I have intermittent problems every once in a while. Is this chronic, or just on occasion that you have the issue?

Ed, I guess you'd call it chronic in the sense that it's happening to every HTP-hosted image, although I have only noticed it's doing this recently. I'm a regular lurker on the Screenshots forum and would have noticed if it had been happening like forever. So if it's my ISP, what can I do? It would be a total pain in the neck to change ISP's just for this.

This has just started happening to me. Seems to be only those that are using Hostthenpost. Tried one of the suggestions above of opening up in separate window/tab using RMB and all I get is their banner asking me which image I wish to upload. Has anyone found any other solutions to this as I feel I am missing out on some teriffic screenshots.
Thanks
Glen

I get the same thing. I hardly look at the USA screenshots thread any more because of issues with HTP which so many US Trainzers seem to use. The images either don't download, download the 'upload' screen instead, or if they do download the speed is so slow the pain is just not worth the gain. I note that most of the 'disgruntled' posts are from Australia and I recall that there was an issue a while ago with the photo host that iceman used conserving bandwidth by ignoring requests from 'distant' addresses (iirc the discussion was in the Gmax thread). Anyway it turned out that most of the folks who couldn't see his images were Oz or other 'distant' destinations. I wonder if something the same sort of thing is happening here.....

It may well be a coincidence, but I've had similar trouble on two occasions. Both occurred after loading Windows updates.

New Windows updates were offered yesterday.

I disabled auto-update two years ago and now only load them selectively, if they are necessary, after reading details of each one.

I did run the included Malicious Software Removal Tool yesterday. I normally don't use it, relying on my commercial antivirus to take charge. However, some of the page refreshing is now very slow, and so is changing user accounts.

This link seems to confirm similar problems.

I thought it would be better when upgrading to Kasperky 2013, but when viewing screenshots some open for a second or two then all of a sudden there is just a little icon and the screenshots are missing, as stated most or all of it is hosthenpost stuff. I hardly look at screenshots lately , too frustrating.

Often when I get that little icon, I click on it and load picture. This gets a window with just the icon but after closing the picture loads.

I have a slowpoke DSL connection with a max of 68kBps, so I get "time out" from imageshack fairly often - got 10 imageshack pictures in a thread it will load 8 of them and decide "that's enough, I'm done". HostThenPost sometimes takes longer than imageshack to load a complete picture, when it finishes loading I usually find the author either doesn't know about compression, or he has high speed cable and doesn't care.

That's actually an average, I've seen PNG images as big as 4 megabytes sometimes. Here's the same 1.4 megabyte image compressed 25%;

At 152kB it might lose a little quality, but it loads much faster.

They load slowly here but they do load eventually, FF18, IE8 and IE9. If all you are getting is the image placeholder that probably means it's timed out. Can't be traffic as they only around 500 hits a day, just been checking on Google for any known issues with hosthenpost, if there are any I can't find them apart from the posts on here and janmarines post on the kapersky forum, not impressed the non advice given there either, upgrade the product wasn't exactly answering your question.

Maybe raise the problem with the N3V helpdesk, as it seems at the moment peculiar to here only.

Problem with the images then I'd guess not here, Good point over the image sizes though, I may be wrong but pretty sure other image sites compress uploaded files to some degree irrespective of what size they are.

For me, the solution was to upgrade from Kaspersky 2012 to 2013. It cost me nothing because this was covered by the existing license. The problem had nothing to do with browser types, image sizes or distance from HTP's servers. It was all about the security software in my case. I now have no trouble viewing the USA screenshots or any forum with HostThenPost images.
