TRIGGERS

Would someone be so kind as to give me some direction about where I can find out about using triggers and what I can do with them and setting speed limits on tracks. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you are in 2006, see page 109 of the manual. It should be in the Auran/TRS2006/Docs/manuals-cd/manual Directory

If you are in 2009 the manual should be in the Auran/TRS2009/extras/documentation Directory.

Setting speed limits on tracks is a matter of placing speed signs along the right-of-way.

Examples of use

Goarmy;

A common use of triggers is to syncronize the movement of trains.
I would suggest you examine the following routes / sessions authored by crb001 (Chuck) on the DLS. Note the trigger locations and how the are used in the driver rules in association with the 'Wait for trigger' commands, which can be used to contol a target train by a one or any other commnds:

Midwest Central - Built 360 kuid2:87783:1134:7 / Return of the Super Chief 87783:1184:1 (I wrote this session for Chuck)

Midwest Central Ver 3 Beta2 87783:1346:1 /Morning Mail 87783:1400:1

This 2nd route also illustrates the use of the 'Trigger Multiple Signal Rule', which can be used to signal crossing and Y's. For more info on setting up this rule get Chucks tutorial (Part 12) at http://trains.0catch.com/index.html

For more advanced applications check out the builtin tutorial route, City and Country 2, Tutorials 3 and 6 (TRS 2006)

The CMP lists 15 other builtin routes, which are depndent on the 'Trigger' asset-1:6132, so have fun.

I haven't studied the other 46 various trigger rules listed by the CMP.

P.S. Are you active in the army, reserve, guard, cadet or football fan? I am a retired (long ago) 1st Lt USA Reserve, Corp of Engineers.

IRVING; THANKS FOR THE INFO. I APPRECIATE YOUR INSIGHTS AND WILL TRY TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE ROUTES YOU SUGGEST. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO DO IS HAVE ONE TRAIN PASS A TRIGGER THAT TELLS ANOTHER TRAIN TO GO. RIGHT NOW THE BEST I CAN DO IS SEND THEM ALL DOWN THE TRACKS LIKE A BIG PARADE. I KNOW THERE HAS GOT TO A BETTER WAY. RETIRED CSM AND FATHER OF A 2008 USMA GRADUATE.

look again at part 12, and don't shout

Just to get you going place a trigger and name it, do the same with a track mark. Get a consist to drive to trackmark xx with the next command being wait for trigger xxx to be triggered by any train. In this case the trackmark is before an industry and the trigger is after the industry making the second consist wait until the first has unloaded and cleared a few sections of track.

FRAN1:

I APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. I AM NOT A COMPUTER GUY AND AM HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO (FOR A STARTER) IS SEND A TRAIN DOWN THE LINE, WHEN IT IS A WAY DOWN, HAVE ANOTHER TRAIN START OFF AND MAYBE THE SAME AT THE OTHER END OF THE LINE. I FIGURE IF I CAN GET THAT THEN THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE TRAFFIC I COULD CREATE. HOW DO I DO IT???

THANKS,

GOARMY

The first train you mention needs to hit a trigger (name it). Train 2+3 if you want are waiting for train 1 to run past that trigger. There first command is wait for trigger (name it) by any train. Follow this by the set of commands as you like.
In surveyor on that route you need to go into edit session then driver commands, edit. You should find the wait for trigger command, tick it and any others you may need (release junction is one).
To place a trigger to the right of the page you will find a menu which has track/track objects/markers/triggers. this is 1 of maybe 8 selections. The right hand one has the triggers. Highlight the trigger then the plus sign then click on the track where you want it. Name it. See how you go from there.

THANKS SO MUCH. I FEEL LIKE A NEW WORLD HAS OPENED UP TO ME.
THAT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! THANKS SO MUCH. NOW, LETS SAY I HAVE A SINGLE LINE STRAIGHT SECTION WITH A PASSING TRACK. 2 TRAINS ON EACH END. WITH YOUR HELP I KNOW HOW TO CONTROL THE DEPARTURE TIMES. HOW DO I PUT A SIGNAL AT THE PASSING TRACK? EVERYTHING I HAVE TRIED ENDS UP STOPPING ALL TRAINS DEAD IN THEIR TRACKS. I NEED SOME HELP...PLEASE.

Back to surveyor, same place as the triggers, track direction markers, put one in the loop with the point facing whichever way you want the consist to go. Middle section you will find track objects. Signals. Place 1 in the loop before it re-joins the main , place another on the main in-between where the loop splits and re-joins. No triggers needed there.

Other commands I've used instead of triggers are the "RaiseEvent" and "WaitFor Event" commands. They are on the DLS under kuid 178892:80006. I used them a lot in my TRS04 layouts but they seem to work just as well in TRS09. You might check them out.

I tried a test track but did not have great success. I am not very computer savvy. What I would like to do for the test (and as a way of learning more about driver commands and signaling) is to start with a single track with 2 locos at each end. Midway I would have an east bound passing track. I would like to start a train at each end and after a bit have the other two trains start. The east bound train would take the passing track and eventually reach the other end followed by the second east bound a few minutes later, while the west bound trains continue on the main track. I am having a problem figuring out how to make the second trains wait for a while before starting and my signals stop everything in both directions. I sure would appreciate a short block of training to help me. About as far as I can get is laying the track. I am hoping that someone who is a little more experienced would take pity on me and walk me through it. I know it can be done but I can't figure it out. Thanks in advance.

Try it with 3 trains, wont work with 4 unless you have 2 loops. Dont forget at the end of your tracks use buffers/track ends, they also act as a signal. Also lay an extra track at each end long enough to accomodate a consist and connect to main. At the end of the tracks place a t/mark and name them.
Instead of going too big at one go just lay 1 board put track on it with loops and sidings, signals. Put single locos and ping them about until you get the hang of it. Boring but you'll get the hang of it quicker.

Triggers/commands

I need some help! I tried a test track which consisted of a single line track with an east bound passing track midway. I started with 2 east bound trains and 2 west bound. What I hoped to do is send one east bound and one west bound train followed by the other east and west bound trains in a couple of minutes. I used a directional marker to indicate east bound trains on the passing a used a signal to hopefully keep the flow running. Unfortunately I had no luck what-so-ever. All the signals did was stop all trains and there was no further progress. I am not a very savvy computer guy. I need some help. Is there someone who would be willing to walk me through, especially the signals and driver commands. About all I have been able to do is lay the track. I am in serious need of a block of instruction if someone would take a little pity. Thank you in advance!!!
