Norfolk Southern has made two more surprise purchase: 100 Ex-Union Pacific SD9043MAC's (SD90MAC's with a 4,300 horsepower 710 engine instead of the 6,000 horsepower 265H), and nine Ex-BNSF SD60M's. The Ex-Union Pacific SD9043MAC's will be numbered 7230 to 7329, while the Ex-BNSF SD60M's will be numbered 6807 to 6815. Worth noting about the SD9043MAC's is that Norfolk Southern's planning on rebuilding them into SD70ACe's in SD9043MAC bodies. Norfolk Southern is also acquiring the remaining twelve SD80MAC's from CSX. CSX got thirteen SD80MAC's in the Conrail split, but one of them, SD80MAC #4594, was wrecked then scrapped. Norfolk Southern is also planning on rebuilding the SD80MAC's, along with adding SD70ACe electrical systems and components, but will keep their 5,000 horsepower 20 cylinder 710 engine.
Also, SD40-2 #6156 has been upgraded by adding electronic fuel injection and also having plugs added for HEP/stand-by use.
