Tree Suggestions?

GN1996

Not a real user title.
I am looking for trees that look good, but don't have a detrimental effect on my computer when they are in large numbers. I have found some trees by mcguirel that look really good and don't reduce performance too bad, but I have to have tree detail on low when they are in large numbers. Does anybody have some suggestions on other trees?

Check out Pofig's trees. They are nice also. With Speed Treez and their relations, there's not need to have as many of them as the old flipboards because the SpeedTreez are more dense.

I am using JVC's "turn-to-camera" trees. Seems to be no limit to the number one can use. Do they look good? See: http://www.doug56.net/MBC_2010_TS12_Route/page73.html

I found the Cattaraugus Creek and Lake Erie to be virtually unplayable until I replaced the trees with JVC payware "camera facing".

I am getting 64 FPS zoomed out and 85 FPS at train level instead of 16 and 25 with the old trees.

Edit: I did try Pofig's Speedtrees replacement and the route ran just as slow.

Yes, I bought a bunch of those and I'm not impressed. If you move around, the tree seems to be turning toward you with the same look. I don't like it, but that's just my opinion.

Not a really wide variety for pofig's trees, however they do look good.
Seriously?
Have you looked in his thread over in the Freeware section?
He has so many tree's that you could not possibly ever use them all. Trees of all shapes and sizes from around the world and all gentle on the PC resources. Mix these in with a few bit's n bob's from the JVC collection and you'll have a picture postcard in no time.

I only found 4 of pofig's trees on the DLS, but that is the only place I searched because they will end up on a multiplayer route I am in the process of building.

For am MP route you are kinda stuck, because it has to be DLS and neither Jan's nor Pofig's good stuff is there.

For a true 3D tree for non-DLS imho you can't beat Pofig's stuff. Is it perfect - no, but for good fps and a good general 'look' they can't be beaten.

Jan's turn-to-camera billboards are brilliant for performance and make stunning screenshots because the load is so low the limiter thing alloows the trees to draw all the way to the horizon. Like Dave though I find them kinda disconcerting in-game because you can almost see the trees 'rotate' as you pass. That's not quite right, but I do find them visually disconcerting. I haven't tried his payware stuff though, that assesment is based on the free turn-to-camera grasses and shrubs that I've tried.

Is there a 'perfect' Trainz tree? Probably not. You just try what's out there and go with what works for you...

I'll probably just stick with mcguirel's trees then. Out of all the trees I've looked at, mcguirel's are the best I can find.

Mix both which I've done.

Also check out trees by gawpo50. He also made some awesome Speed Tree variants as well from all over the world. They look really nice and mix well with the McGuirel Trees.

I would advise to stay clear of any "turn to camera" trees bushes and grasses. It really does look creepy as you pass by and all the vegetation turns and follows you down the line like your caught in a haunted wood. Beware, the trees have eyes.

A few words about camera-facing vegetation...

In the first place, the camera facing trees where not ment as 'main' vegetation, but to be used behind a line of 3D trees. The camera facing trees look much better than 3D trees at some distance as they will keep their 'look' at longer distance compared the 3D trees (my opinion). If you see all screenshots I doubt many ppl will disagree with me here...

Shrubs may have the same effect as trees but in smaller amount as they are smaller in size. For grass I do not see any option for the camera facing vegetation. Splines look terrible in Ts12 (ok in Ts2010) as you see the edge and the plane sides (of a billboarded) grass is way too visible. You either have to choose the 'ugly' edge/visible plane type OR a camera facing grass without this effect. You can't use 3D grass/groundcover vegetation as it will blow your PC skyhigh regarding framerates (except for a bare landscape 'desert' type). Even if you have a brand new PC, you can't use 3D grass and if you do, you have to be very carefull using it and you no longer have a smooth running layout/route.

Most of the 3D trees also use 'camera-facing' leafs and I have tested it against static leafs. The 'camera-facing' leafs look much better and are used by Pofig, Mc Guirel and myself. But if you take a close look you will notice that they are 'locked on' to you;)...

My point here is to use the right type of vegetation for the right setting and you don't need a high-poly 3D tree 200 meters away...

Hi John

Thanks for the free plug there, much appreciated. There will be more trees done later this year hopefully, I can't say when as I have so much dev work on my plate that I can't seem to find enough hours in the day. Most is for a new route that is being done which the loco's in separate threads plus a series of animated proto turnouts when ready.

My thoughts exactly.

I don't, however, mix Pofig's trees with others' trees, as Pofig's trees have mipmapping of their foliage textures disabled, causing the sparkly/glittery effect that they have, making them stand out from others' trees. Of course, your taste may vary.

Hey, you're welcome Peter. I try to throw the free adverts around for awesome creators. :)

Good luck on your dev work. I understand about the lack of time. I work 60 hours a week now due to a bunch of new hires that just started.
