I am surprised how some in this thread appear to have accepted the subscription basis for the site, as when N3V suggested a subscription-based service for the Trainz Next version of the simulator sometime back it was very much "shouted down" wholeheartedly by a great number of members on this forum.

A very interesting observation but I think that the difference may be due to TKI not being an absolute necessity for running Trainz while accessing the subscription services for TANE NEXT (or whatever) may not be optional - although I believe that the subscription suggestion may only have been "run up the flag pole" for a multi-player Surveyor option.

I have never used TKI as I don't use any assets from 3rd party sites and I probably would not be interested in using a multi-user Surveyor option - so a subscription on either would not bother me.

...and one does not have to purchase a FCT to have access to all Trainz features--big difference. I can hardly imagine that the cost of the FCT is completely justified for the actual expenses incurred when turning on the spigot for full download speed. In other words, I am betting that N3V could underwrite the expenses of keeping TKI going without even increasing the base FCT cost; if this is the case, for someone like me it is a no-brainer!

And about N3V ownership/responsibilities and so forth. Doesn't N3V already sell routes and content from third-parties through their store (we know the answer). I see no difference here...

Because of the time-consuming work to keep up-to-date the data base and the weak support of the community to help, and also because I have no more money and I need to spend my time to find money now, I decide to close the site in a few days.

I am very sad of that situation and I apologize to the thousands of users who make every month more than 20.000 requests for finding missing kuid.

Many thanks to the 69 people who support my work by donating. I apologize to them too.

Pierre

I am one of your contributors, all though it was not that much. But I have another contribution I can make that could keep you going. I am the owner of Railworks America. 2 years ago I had the site on a shared server with my host. It became too busy and they said my system was using 98% of the processing and I would either have to shut down or move to a dedicated server. A popular 3rd party route developer name of Rick Grout built me a route to use for donations. And made it possible for me to not have a subcription site. I moved to a dedicated server that is $150 a month. I have 2 TB of hard drive space and 30,000 Gig of bandwidth a month. Railworks Amrica uses 80 gig of storage and about 400 gig of bandwidth a month. As you can see I have an excessive amount of dead space.

I can set you up a spot on my server which you would have your own cpanel to do whatever you needed to do with out my intervention. I can most likely help you in making the move and if not, my tech support is awesome and they may charge a few dollars to do it for me. Which I will pay if need be as another donation to your service.

I also use a place called namecheap.com and I register my sites with them for $10 a year. Your could transfer your domain to them if you are paying more than $10 a year.

Just so you understand I do not want to take your site over, you would have to still do all that work of the database. It just won't cost you anything except your domain name.

If you want to talk, send me a private message here and I will get you my email or send me yours.

I think even if the database wasn't maintained it would still be of value, it would at least indicate where a particular content creator normally hosted their content.

welp, I download a lot of stuff, and this has helped me a whole lot. Looks like I'll have to get my last kuids searched.........

Except the 3rd party routes and content (DLC payware) are provided at the N3V site, not 3rd party sites. From the posts that far too often appear in these forums with heading lines like "Missing kuids", it seems that a lot of searches on Google and TKI to locate missing assets come up empty.

So far 69.29 % of the requests on TKI give a result.

I have had more like 90-95% finding them using your site. Lets us know when we can donate to keep your site up. Thanks.

Any idea on what way you are leaning to get your site back into full swing again Pierre ?. Been a bit quite in here.
Cheers Mick.

Currently I am modifying some parts of the site to implement an annual subscription for the kuid search. It will take a few days as I must implement more of the Paypal API and upgrade for a new version of PHP.
The minimum subscription will be 15US$ per year but people will be able to give more if they want.

Great idea thanks for letting me know.
Cheers Mick.:)

I'm happy enough to contribute via that method, but I'm a bit concerned for those who for whatever reason are unable to use Paypal (too young, haven't got a card that Paypal supports etc).

This news makes me happy, Pierre. I am one of the few who already contributed to your site but I will certainly pay again. now for an annual sub. Thanks for not letting us down :D

Pierre, this is good news and I'm happy to contribute to the site. As per Shane's query, would you consider free subscriptions for under-16s (and possibly over-60s)? Also, I think that publicity and promotion of your site will be important if it's to succeed with a subscription model - regular updates on here would be a good idea!

Question: How would one be able to verify one's identity (age ) on the internet? Anyone can say he or she is over 16 and I think we all know nowadays faked identities are
more common than exceptions. ID cards from friends can be used...., etc. Then there are also privacy laws which differ from country to country. I think it is unfeasible.

So, let me get this straight: rather than just leaving the site up with the kuids already found, you intend to put it behind a paywall?!

Please don't. Alot of us don't have easy access to payment on the internet. My parents won't let me use my debit card on the internet because they think my information will be stolen more easily than if I had a credit card, and they won't let me use PayPal because they also think it's unsecure, and also a scam.
