Have just purchased a new PC - Spec.. Intel i7 3.6.. Asus P9X79 Pro MB... 16gb Kingston Hyperx DDR3 2133 ... 2x 2gb Nvidia GTX 670 .. Onboard Realtek HD audio.... Windows 7 64bit
Graphic and spund drivers all up to date..
Trainz12 either stutters.. or freezes for secs..or freezes full time....
Any thoughts... solutions please..

Trainz doesn't support SLI which may or may not be a problem.

Win7 requires Trainz to be run as Administrator, that's in addition to whatever account you are using including admin. http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=running-as-administrator Not doing this can cause problems with saving settings, updating the database, saving during the game and a few other things due to write restrictions in Program Files. Usually OK if you installed as Administrator to Start with.

Trainz require DirectX 9c to be installed alongside DX10 and 11 as, contrary to what Microsoft says, they are not fully backwards compatible. http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=updating-directx Symptoms of not having DX9c would be poor performance in DirectX. Installing DX9c does not affect 10 or 11 in any way.

I assume you have updated the Graphics drivers from Nvidia and are not using ones supplied by Microsoft or Content manager wouldn't work. If you are using OpenGL, it's way down on DirectX performance these days in 64bit Windows

Screen Resolution should be the displays Native resolution and should be the same in Launcher Options and trainzoptions.txt, a couple of patches have been known to change it in trainzoptions.txt

Hello Ken
Thanks for the input..
I had deducted that sli could be a problem and diabled it..
I am running it as Administrator but not certain that I did it at install stage..
Thanks for the Dx9c link...will go there..
The problems are consistent however in both DX and OpenGl but note your comment about DX being superior..
Where do I find trainzoptions.txt?
nvidia graphic drivers bang up to date as are the Realtek HD onboard audio drivers...
My monitor is a Samsung Sync Master 214t with native windows drivers.... Samsung don't provide a windows 7 driver..
Hard drives are (C 240gb Kingston Hyperx 3k ssd sata 6 .. (D Seagate Barracuda ST 2000 DM001-9NY... Trainz12 is installed on the latter...
I will do a reinstall, but would appreciate any furthe advice that you may have..
Many thanks..

TrainzOptions.txt is the Trainz folder to be honest I've forgotten the default folder name as I've got a few versions installed and have changed a few names probably N3v\TS12 or maybe Auran\TS12, right click on the desktop icon, properties, Open file location will find the right place anyway.

Shouldn't be getting any lag or stutter with that setup, more than likely the DirectX.

Two possibilities, 1 what kind of internet connection do you have, dialup, DSL, or cable?
2, the only thing about your system specs that jumps out at me is the sound - Onboard Realtek HD audio. Sound chips sometimes don't have built in dedicated sound processors or memory, so they use the CPU to process sound. Try restarting the system and hit F2 or whatever the key is for your computer to get into the system BIOS. Disable the onboard sound, see if Trainz runs better with no sound. In my case it didn't work, I have a Sigmatel onboard sound chip, but disabling that and installing a soundblaster audigy didn't fix the problem. But if it works for you, no more stuttering with the Realtek chip disabled, your next investment would be an actual sound card.

Many thanks for the input..
My internet connection is cable..
Did wonder about the onboard sound... but have managed to achieve improvments so far.. see above... will try you suggestion as last resort...
Many thanks..

Hi Malc..
Got into the Trainzoption folder and there was a discrepancy with the reolution.. edited it from 1024x768 to 1600x1200... has improved things quite significantly.. smoother... although still get a signicant lag when shanging from cab view to line view (depending on route).. then an elament of stuttering before settling down... (both the same for DX and OpenGL)....
I intend to reinstall and will at that stage allocate Administrator rights... I will also download DX9c..... Intend to use the webinstall option... which I assume will sit it alongside DX11... or do I have to place DX9 in the Trainz folder? ... Sorry to be a pain...
Many thanks..

Don't use the web install as in most cases it detects Win7 and current version of DX and updates that without installing DX9c files, you need to use the redistributable for Win7. Just run the installer and its adds the missing bits to the DX files already present.
