Trainz Simulator 12 Android - Black screen

GTAX

New member
Dear Sir or Madam,

I purchased your game Trainz Simulator 12 via Humble Bundle and tried to run it on a Samsung Galaxy S Advance smartphone and a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet both running Android 4.4.2. On both devices the installation and download of the game files works properly. Unfortunately after the download was completed or when trying to restart the app the screen becomes black and nothing more happens.

It would be very nice if you could help me with respectively investigate this issue maybe specific to this Android version. If you need more information about my hardware/software situation feel free to contact me.

Kind regards

Welcome to the forums.

I notice you mention both Trainz Simulator 12 (TS12) and Trainz Android. Can I check which one you are actually having problems with, as TS12 and Trainz Android are two separate products.

If you could post your hardware and software specifications, this will help N3V and other community members to identify the problem (it's the processor I'm mainly interested in - Trainz Android requires a NVidia Tegra 2 processor or better).

It might also help if the purchased copy of TS12 is registered with Planet Auran. ;)

And why should he register, and be stuck with, something that is not working properly?
--Once registered, he can not re-sell the un-useable-to-him product, that someone else might very well be able to use, and willing to purchase, legitamately.

If the problem is resolved, and he begins using the product, then yes, he needs to register...not before.

I agree with KingConrail76, although at the moment it's not clear which version the OP is actually having problems with gauging by the title (as they mention Trainz Simulator 12 as well as an Android device).

Hello Auran community. Here to contribute, for I am in the same situation as the OP.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the version of the game in question. We have purchased a game that is listed as "Trainz Simulator 12" from a current Humble Bundle Weekly Sale, which can be found at www.humblebundle.com/weekly for the next 2 days. The bundle includes an android version. In the Humble Bundle Android Client, the game is titled "Trainz Simulator 12". However, it is shown in the Android app drawer simply as "trainz". So a mislabeled title may be causing the confusion. But we are referring to an Android version of the game.

Upon launch of the client, 4 "content files" download. But after finishing, we are presented with only a black screen.

What I have tried:
-Restart device
-Force Stop and restart app
-Delete game data
-Delete game cache
-Complete uninstall, Redownload and install client, Redownload content files.

My Device:
Nexus 7 2013 KitKat 4.4.2

I will be leaving for work shortly and will not be able to reply until later this evening.

P.S. This reply box is rough! Why are so many characters not registering? I have to keep retyping words over and over. Is it the auto-save function? How to turn it off? Very frustrating when trying to type quickly.

Welcome to the forums, Zac.

Sorry to hear of your problem. I doubt you can install TS12 on a 'Droid device as that would be a different file format. Besides, TS12 download is quite huge and would eat up all your storage space. If anything this is a false advertising by humblebundle.com, or a mistake on their part in showing the wrong product. The products share the Trainz name, but the tablet edition is quite different, though similar in how it works.

For starters, I suggest that you start with their customer service first. Any other technical issues with the 'Droid versions should be posted in the 'Android support forums here. Other users with the same version, as well as N3V support folks that frequent that forum, can help you. If you need additional support, contact the helpdesk via the link above in the forum.

Perhaps a mod can rename the topic and move it to the right location for the OP?

What I have tried:
-Restart device
-Force Stop and restart app
-Delete game data
-Delete game cache
-Complete uninstall, Redownload and install client, Redownload content files.

This is exactly what I tried, however I have a different device:

Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 running the current official Samsung ROM of Android 4.3
AP: I9505XXUEMKF
CP: I9505XXUEMKF
CSC: I9505PHNEMK5

The purchased Humble Bundle contains both games: Trainz Simulator 12 (Windows/Steam) and Trainz (Android).
The method of installation is through a special app of Humble Bundle: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.humblebundle.library
Obviously only the Android version of the game is offered through the Android app, to install the Windows version you have to download the game off the Humble Bundle website or use Steam.

So, my Android game downloads and installs through the Humble Bundle app. When starting the game, it states it is downloading and installing 4 updates. After the 4th update reaches 100% the screen turns black, and my phone becomes somewhat unresponsive:
- Pressing Power button once does nothing, pressing it a second time shows me the unlock screen, unlocking the screen won't work anymore though.
- Pressing back or menu button lights up those keys, but nothing happens.
- Pressing home button will return me to a rotated version of the home screen. An odd sight, because rotating the home screen is not supported on phones as far as I know. Half the buttons are off screen as they just won't fit. I solve this by locking and unlocking the screen with the power button.

That is all I can contribute right now. If you need any other information I'm happy to provide.

thanks in advance,
Martijn

Ive just taken a look at the advert on humblebumble and they are clearly advertising TS12 including using the video trailer for it. No wonder our new friends are confused. Someone needs to tell humblebumble to sell the product they are advertising or change the advertising. Legally in the UK they would be compelled to offer TS12 not the android version as that is what is on offer.

edit: Out of interest - what are the files called that you downloaded?

They do advertise an android version, it has the droid logo along with the windows logo and steam logo.

The App that was installed on my phone is just called Trainz.
Using ES File Explorer I found a file called: trainzsimulator12_1.0_android_1388186509.apk

Sorry for my late response!

Indeed I was talking about the only game in that bundle including an Android version which was labelled "Trainz Simulator 12".

The tablet is a Nexus 7 (2013).

Display: 1.920 x 1.200 pixels at 7"
CPU: 1,5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro (Quad-core)
GPU: Adreno 320, 400 MHz
RAM: 2 GB
OS: CyanogenMod 11 (Android 4.4.2)

The smartphone is a Samsung Galaxy S Advance (i9070) which is not important for playing. It was just a try.

Display: 480 x 800 pixels at 4"
CPU: 1 GHz Cortex A9 (Dual-core)
GPU: Mali 400
RAM: 768 MB
OS: CyanogenMod 11 (Android 4.4.2)

Trainz Android requires a NVidia Tegra 2 processor or better
The Snapdragon should be one of the better processors, but if the game relies on a white-list of processors and this one is not in it would explain the issue.

My first step was an e-mail to support@n3vgames.com. Shortly after I got an automatic reply pointing me to an online support center where there wasn't Android available in the list of operating systems.

Out of interest - what are the files called that you downloaded?

I just wanted to add that I'm in the same boat. I installed Trainz through the humble bundle app on both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7. I opened the Trainz app, it downloaded 4 files, then all I get is a black screen.

Rather than contacting support via email,

Contact them through the helpdesk portal at http://support.trainzportal.com

You will need to sign in, using the same username and password you used to setup and account here.

This link will bring up a form that you can then fill out, choose the appropriate category, if there is one and then fill in the blanks.

Thinking about this, I wonder if this is an issue with the Nexus phones? I have an Asus Transformer and have no issues with the application.

In the folder \Android\data\com.n3vgames.android.trainz\files\userdata\cache\
I have an additional folder named "libraries", which seems to be missing on your installation.
It contains 17 more folders named "kuid" followed by mostly 2 sets of numbers (for instance "kuid 30501 1008"). The 17 folders contain 29 *.gsl files.

In the folder \...\files\userdata\libraries\
I have 99 files with a total size of 1.201.204 bytes which you did not list here. All 99 files in this folder are *.gsl files.

In the folder \...\files\userdata\settings\
I have the same 2 files, but also a 3rd file named "globalmodule.txt"

Even though I seem to have more files than you listed here, my copy doesn't work either.

This morning I tried to reinstall the app by:
- deleting the Humble Bundle data (in app management, deletes your login info as well so you will have to log in to the app)
- deleting the installation package in Humble Bundle's download folder
- deleting the app itself

this time the Humble Bundle app has to download and install it all over again, and all of a sudden it had to download and install 8 content files rather than 4. After the 8th file it goes black for a second and then the next screen shows where it scans whether all files are complete. Then the app runs just fine.

I did a quick test with the first tutorial, it works for me now! (Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505)

Maybe you would have had less stress if you had not been a 'cheapskate' & downloaded direct from N3v. :p

Great to hear that you got it working. Now you SHOULD go to the Planet Auran link at the top of the page and register your serial numbers, as this will allow the community to see you are a valid user, providing better assistance in teh future, and allow you access to other parts of the forum that are restricted to "registered users".

Pay no mind to "Blackwatch". You have a legitimate copy of the software, purchaced from a legitimate retail partner, and you saved money to boot...he's just jealous because he paid full price.

Not "jealous" at all, I got my copy of TS12 from N3v at a very good discount. :p

In the meantime Humble Bundle has delivered an updated version (1.3.7). Now everything works fine on both of my devices.

Thank you all for your support!
