Trainz on Netbooks

I know Netbooks are not good for these sorta things but what would be the best version of Trainz to run on a netbook ?

The specs are as following:

Intel ATOM N270 1.60Ghz
1GB RAM
Intel GMA 950 Video
Windows 7 Home Basic 32 Bit

Hi there

Had 2004 & 2006 low poly routes ok higher poly routes run jerky even with sliders normal, TC runs jerky on most routes. Best i could get to run was Sp3 & I reckon Ultimate would also run ok, some people says this one had the best AI but can't comment as I never owned it.

Also just for your intrest the only thing I left on 2004 at the moment is the Berlin U7 Route that seems to run ok due to its limited view, you can even turn the distance sliders up a little to make it look better.

All this on a Asus EEEPC 1000H

Hope this helps

Tom

I doubt TS2010 or TS12 would work on this netbook Lol

I think TRS2004 would be good but what would be the lastest edition of trainz to run good on a netbook ?

If trainz has problems running on laptops (notebooks) sometimes, I don't think I'd recommend a netbook. You would probably need more RAM. I never played any version of trainz below trainz 2006 but maybe trainz 2004 or 2006 could run on the netbook with the sliders on low-medium. I think your specs meet the minimum requirements so you should be able to run 2004 and 2006. I don't think netbooks come with CD/DVD drives but it is possible to take a CD drive from a dekstop and get it working to the notebook. I have seen it before but am not sure how to do it. If that doesn't work, you could use a digital download.

Not hard to do either use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter or just get a USB CD/DVD drive.
Either will work since windows has basic drivers for any CD/DVD drive, save for a select few.

My wifes computer has the CD/ROM turned on it's side, and her new camera came with one of those micro-CD's. Couldn't get the darned thing to stay in long enough to get the door closed, and not enough room on her desk to lay her computer on it's side.

I ended up sharing my CD/ROM drive to the home network, and put her CD in it.

Worked like a charm.

The TRS2004 game engine needs more hardware resources running the same content to get the same frame rates. If TS2010/12 doesn't cut it then I doubt TRS2004 will either. First set the performance sliders back then try to create a simple loop using one of the low poly tracks and put a simple diesel loco on it and see if it works.

Then add things very slowly.

Forget TS2010 or above, try TC3 or below on that sort of thing. I've run both on 2 types of eeePC, the 701 and 901 quite sucessfully. If you need a video, I can produce one.

If that's the case, then answer this ........................

Why are the recommended machine specs for 2010/2012 higher than those for 2004/2006 ?

Because the average content is more demanding and the recommendations are more realistic.

Same content with the same draw settings runs with better frame rates on roughly 95% of machines. Don't forget the default distance setting on TS2010 is five km and TRS2004 is one.

I'll take your word for it John, but how can you compare the content, as 2004 stuff has to be altered to run in TS12 (hence all the "fixing" going on with dls content) and although TS2010 has 'Compatibilty Mode', it's been said on these boards that it runs like a dog if you use that mode.

With the spec on that netbook, I doubt it would run well with any version.

Error free TRS2004 content will run under both TRS2004 and TS12. I actually have some TRS2004 content that didn't need to be corrected for TS2010 and as far as I knwo it runs under TS12 as well. It's just that the content that was made for TRS2004 often had errors in it. Remember Tafweb's program that highlighted errors? I recall going through more than one content creators work and fixing the same error in every config.txt file they had made.

The average content that followed the TRS2004 CCG as far as polys and such were concerned is lighter in load than the average later stuff.

I think my latest carriage has six .im files 307KB, 210 KB, 47KB, 32KB, 32KB, 20KB compared to an earlier coach that I think has one 97KB .im file, more materials as well.
