Trainz in the Beginning

Updated

Hi Pommie,
That brings back some memories! I still have Trainz, used it for a while then 'upgraded' to UTC. One of the main differences I recall when 2004 came out was that stock could be placed anywhere without needing a marker to set them to.
Good old British Midlands - and it's still going strong....!! Needs and update in my opinion. And the blue 125 set.

Thanks for that Pommie.

Angela

Wait a minute, I did update this route! It is called West Country Days....

And I had a go at Rosworth too, look for Blackheath Down.

Must be going senile, can't even remember what I've done now!!

It's fun to have a look here every now and again.

No steam locomotives at the beginning of course.

Okay, gotcha. maybe you need to edit your post to tell people to cut and paste. Most people like me will simply click it and get TS2009.

That's actually not the original box. This is the very first release of Trainz way back in 2001 (if I recall).

Note the wording: Model Railroading On Your PC. That was changed in the next print run because Auran realised that people weren't using it as a model railroad simulator. Here's part of what I had to say on another thread today:

I have the first Trainz CD Case in front of me. It was a single CD entitled Trainz... Model Railroading on your PC. The word Model was dropped soon after when Auran realised that most people were using the program as a real Rail Simulator. I think Trainz was the brainchild of Bob Shaw, who dreamed about a virtual model railroading program, rather than having to build the real thing in his loungeroom. As mikemike mentioned, most of the routes were loops (but quite long ones), however there were a couple of out and back routes chucked in.

I remember one where you could get off the loop and arrive/or leave fro a multi platform station in a city. Just outside the station were the usual crossovers and signals. In a forum post at the time, someone mentioned that there was a double slip switch buried away in the layout, but the best I could find was what looked like a double slip if it was made up with standard crossovers.

Not having much experience with Surveyor at the time, I set about designing a proper double slip switch. Being delighted with the result, I created what may have been one of the first third party tutorials for Trainz.

Here's a link.

The folks at Auran were a lot closer to their client base in those days, and it was lovely to receive a email from them thanking me for my contribution. The email went on to say that they didn't realise themselves that such a detailed piece of track could be created with Surveyor. I think that was just one of the thousand surprises they've had over the years.

Yeah, that's it ... wow, it does bring back memories, you know

Just for a bit of fun I installed Trainz 1.1.1 :hehe:

Cheers David

So that was what it was meant to look like! I ran Trainz V1 on a P4 1.8 (256 Meg) and below spec TNT16 card - all draw distances set to minimum. Everything popped into view just in front of me, so never saw it quite like that!

oh boy. I remember how excited I was after ordering 1.3 out of the Scholastic Magazine program. Soon after I saw UTC at Frys Electronics and then 2004 and 2006... that was around the time I gave up on rehashed versions with pooey GUI and 3rd party content up until 2009 came out.

Does not even feature Trainz CE, which was from dec 2001.

But i do remember that site, it looks better than the current DLS style.

Trainz CE or Community Edition was the downloadable version of the box I displayed in my earlier post. Being on Dialup at the time, I have to wait for the boxed version which arrived at my doorstep a day or two after CE was released. As such, Community Edition was never a hard published title to my knowledge, thus no mention to it would have been made on the web site.

Here's a very interesting site by Charlie Lear. It hasn't been updated since 2006, but still interesting nether the less.

Didn't they have like a model of the week or something, where you could download a new model and rotate it around to look at it from all views?

That was prior to the first release. It wasn't a weekly thing, but from time to time they produced a model as a teaser. The Croc with turning wheels and drive gear was the most popular. I thought I had some movies from way back them but I can only find stuff back to TRS2004. I'll keep looking though.

They're the movies, but not the models Pencil42 was referring to. The models were rotating 3D about postcard size. You needed a special plug-in to view them. There were only a few.
