I don't have Vista but I think I have seen that problem addressed on this forum several times before. Try a forum "search".

TS2009:WBE:when i open the game in OpenGL mode its says open it in directX mode, but when i open it in directX mode right after i launch it crashes and says Trainz has stoped working....then i click show problem details, problem Name:APPCRASH......:'(

Trainz runs great in Vista, BUT you must install it properly. First, uninstall Trainz then reinstall as follows:

Disable or turn off your antivirus program.

Insert the Trainz CD/DVD, but DO NOT let the installer install. Hit cancel.

In Windows Explorer (Computer), right-click on your CD/DVD drive and select Open.

Right-click on the Setup file and select Run as Administrator. Select Allow on the next screen & install normally. Install any service packs in the same manner (using Run as Administrator).

Turn your antivirus back on.

There's a forum thread someplace with detailed instructions, but this should suffice.

Good luck! Let us know if we can help.

One more thing,
can you go to options from the main page or dose it crash before you get that far?
Have you loaded it with SP1 , SP2, or has you version already got SP1 loaded?
Do you know the build Number?
Have you downloaded the right upgrades for that build?

i can get to the launcher....ive tried to install the service pack's but at the end of the SP download it fails for some wierd reason and wont let me install it.....so pretty much everything that can go wrong-will go wrong-El'Robbie

Have you ticked the auto update box in options? also try doing it with the anti virus divice you've got switched off.
By the way what anti-virus divces do you have?
Mine's kaspersky 2009.

Try entering the line "into=disable" into the trainzoptions file located in the Auran/TRS folder this causes allot of crashes upon start even with my own Vista 64bit laptop I had to do it.
