Howdy, thought id do a little spring cleaning and found that the backup folder in Application Support is now at 80GB. If this is 'backup' stuff can I delete it without problems?

EDIT: I see a lot of people viewing this but no responses. I'm talking about the folder in Library > Application Support > com.n3vgames.trainzmac > backups (its full of folders with numbers like '12-09-08'.

What are these backups of? The filenames inside have incomprehensible names '507l4kpt241'.

???

Hi Stuart,

People are viewing the thread, and probably trying to figure out what to do. Many of us have the PC version which has a different folder structure than yours. This is a bit confusing, I will admit!
From what I understand, these are backups of your editing and content updates, which can be restored if you should get things messed up. I have never used them myself, so I really can't confirm this.

Yes, I believe you can delete these files, they should be deleted every time you start Trainz and or Content Manager anyway, and deleted after a specified amount of days. There's actually a setting for this in Content Manager. How long do you want to keep the backups for. It's under the preferences.

There is no settings related to the backups. What I did was delete them and then went and configured my Mac to 'lock' the folder to make sure no new backups are created.

On the Mac version there are very limited 'settings' regarding anything other than graphics.

Have you encountered any problems?

I have not encountered any problems yet, and I've been doing it for months now. It's the only solution right now to avoid the trouble with backups, which are useless in the first place.

Thanks for that. I've now just recovered 80GB so I'm a happy bunny. I did a very quick fire up of Trainz and it seemed to start up and load a route much quicker?!

What helps in speed and amount of space claimed by Trainz, is to every now and then clean out your asset list.

This is a filter I set at least once a month:
- Location = Local
- Build-in = False
- Obsolete = True
Deleting those saves me 100+ mb each month.
