Trainz and Windows 8?

does not make bogies
Hey, as many of you are aware I am rebuilding my computer. We just replaced the motherboard and I need to know something. Will Trainz 2012 work and run good in windows 8? Or will it be a mess and I should stay with windows 7? Im sure theres a thread on this but I may have missed it. Anyways any help is greatly appreciated.

I would say stay with Windows 7. Windows 8, from my experience, is not that easy to use, and is inefficient to run. You have to pay, yes I said PAY, just to have a start button!

Ok, thats crap. My dad runs windows 8. I can run it easily. Thats not even what I asked. Im wondering how compatible trainz is with windows 8. And I know you have to pay money.

Hi Ben,

Trainz TS12 runs fine with Windows 8.x. You need to follow the same rules as you did with Windows 7 and install and run the program as Administrator.

I too have no problems with it anymore ever since I updated my BIOS and now using 8.1 which has improved drivers.

Hackintosh it and never worry about buying a touch screen in the future.
I use Windows 7 Pro for trainz. Windows 8 has too many annoying animations, sounds, menus, etc.

I use Windows 8 on my laptop and Windows 7 on my desktop. Both run TS12 really well. Just run as Admin. as a previous poster stated.

Windows 8 and Trainz, no problem

Take a look at the #1 post in the following thread that I started. It answers all of your questions:

It also tells you how to avoid running as Administrator.

Don't bother reading the rest of the thread because some of the Windows 8 haters showed up.

If you look at my signature below I am now running Windows 8.1 and the latest build without any problems.

Thanks all. And sorry, when I said I was on my mom's laptop it was because my computer needs a hardrive. we already knnow what we need, we just have to get it. So again thanks and I might try windows 8

If you think you will miss the start button, take a look at http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php . I have been using that start menu for many months. You can configure it to boot to the normal desktop, remove all the gestures and only go into metro apps if you really feel the need. It makes win 8 work just like win 7. Before you ask, I am stuck with win 8. It came with my gaming laptop and I cannot get all of the drivers to run win 7. Trainz runs like a dream on it. Two SSD drives installed.

Trainz works just fine with Windows 8 and 8.1. I ran it on both. If you have Win8, you should get the 8.1 update for free as I did. I use the classic shell program to restore the start menu like it was with Windows Vista (I never ran Win7 before). I can say it will work well.

This is a great little utility. I used this when it first came out. It was a bit buggy, but the guys at IOBit fixed them and it runs well. For my Win 8.1 setup, I took all my desktop-only apps and put shortcuts into a single folder on my desktop. I access that as a mini-menu for those applications since I rarely run any Metro applications at all. I think I've been to the "Start Menu" three times since I setup my computer this way.

Regarding performance, I find Win 8.1 to be much better than Win 8.0 and more stable with my hardware. When I first installed Win8, I had numerous BSOD due to hard drive controller problems. I updated my BIOS and that didn't solve the problem, but did make the computer run a bit faster. When I updated to Win 8.1, the BSODs have disappeared so apparently Microsoft fixed the Intel SATA controller issue with that build.

I listed valid reasons not to like windows 8. I gave it a try and did not like it, so I don't see why you're making a mountain out of a molehill.
I did not bash it to extreme levels, I just said I don't like it.

I have had (one broke and runs 7 now) two computers running 8, and have had no issues running Trainz on them. I personally quite like 8 and 8.1, which should be provided as a free update through the app store... just know that for some reason content manager doesn't handle the trainz asset database very well, and you'll probally have to do a database repair after installing content.

Be kind to your self and stay away from w8. I only had nothing but trouble and went back to 7 and everything is fine.

I use W8, and it worked fine for a while. A little while back I got a blue screen and now TAD won't work. That never happened to me on 7 before, so I don't know anymore.

Trainz and windows 8 runs GREAT. There is an increase in visuals/performance/FPS. I have yet to be shutout of a Trainz application/session and having windows 8 for quite sometime.

Windows 8.1 works just fine. You can turn off all the bells and whistles (hahaha) on it, and boot to desktop, install a FREE start menu. It also works/boots faster than Windows 7. For real!

This is probably okay with older hardware that you can get the drivers for, but with newer computers and newer components, Windows 7-specific drivers are going to be difficult to find. Many years ago this was an issue when going from Windows NT to Windows 2000 and newer versions of Windows server, and will be an issue to as time goes along and Windows 8.x is more accepted.

As has been said, Windows 8.1 has proven to be quite stable with the right drivers.
