Trainz 2009 World Builder - Don't Buy It

TS2009 uses less resources for the same frames per sec on the same content than any version of Trainz.

Cheerio John

Looks like I may as well go ahead & order it from amazon then seeing as I'm having a heck of a time getting it at either best buy or wal-mart.

But there is. Use the Y thingy in to menu bar to open the "search filter".
Note to Auran - this question comes up repeatedly. By all means keep the filter for the small number of users who discover it and take the time to learn how to use it, but please restore the previous method as well for all those who don't.

Don't assume that people who want to drive trains and make layouts inherently understand computer database terminology and usage. Most do not and never will.

John
(My personal opinion, not necessarily that of RBR)

I'm sorry...Auran Trainz is terrific...still, it's not for everyone...

 Thanks guys for your opines,

In my opinion Auran Trainz TS2009WBE is a great pastime for the money...about $40 bucks....:o

Isn't this rather presumptive?

Not really. Count me among the large number who didn't know of this feature till I read Baureihe41's post. One of my principle arguments against 06/09 is the lack (or so I thought) of any content filter. I just spent 5 minutes playing with it and it's potential is huge - love it. Now if I can just get the darn program to behave you could count me as a convert.....

Andy :)

My mainline train-simulator of choice...

 Well Dermmy, this road is one you have to plot out for what you wish to do.

I only feature TS2009, I use your routes.

The missing ingredient is that former assets need updating to eliminate stupid stuff like using caps in gmax...or maybe a miss-match of textures that have alpha textures the wrong size...extra files that are demanded however are not needed, etc.

Scripts that are missing from the asset folder...

The Auran side of this is progressing nicely thank you...we have normal maps that put WofT to shame...but WofT has the detailed interactive cabs & the lack of newer content tells me that is being looked after.

I saw a picture on the web the other day that had a view of far off scenery as a grayish blue tint caused by fog...

I ignore this & build routes just the same, I kind of think it shall be resolved presently...but my bugaboo is lack of asset upgrades by the wonderful Content Creators.

After all, Auran is all about a robust, under-utilised Jet Engine & formatting offered a long time ago....

And gmax+Trainz Content Creation Studio a long ago abandoned 3D CAD program is still relevant if one knows how to use it.

Family Lines System SD45-2's swimming down from Hazard...God help us!

It could be the old story that those who found the filter and are happily using it don't post.

In the great 04/06 wars it was pointed out that the content filter was one of the innovations of 06. It seems there was such a lot of noise going on back then that the message didn't get through to everyone.

There will always be someone who is disappointed at what they have just purchased and I too feel that I wasted money on TRS2006 and TS09 however, just for some different perspectives:

I spent around $20,000.00 sometime ago on a car that was a liability right up until I traded it in.

I spent a small fortune and almost 25 yrs on a relationship that ...... well we wont go there!

I have bought many "under $1000.00" items that performed less than satisfactorily.

A $50.00 piece of software pales by comparison. However, recognizing that there are users whose circumstances do dictate financial due diligence, I would suggest that you consider what you are getting (a railway simulator), and then consider your alternatives. A model railroad will be extremely expensive by comparison. The last steam loco (HO) that I bought was over $200.00 and that was pre-TRS2004! I fully agree that an item should live up to its "marketing hype" but (with over 30yrs of professional purchasing behind me), one must accept the reality of our culture.

Finally, being an ex-HO railway lover, I can only say that getting any Trainz version up and running in a reasonably realistic setting is so much easier than setting up a model railway. Trainz gives us good sound, both loco and rolling stock, and the "icing on the cake" (for me) is that I no longer have to squint and struggle with soldering tiny little wires in order to get lights to work!

Please tell me wise sages why Andy is so excited about this feature. I am just a humble scenario creator and know nothing about the power of content filters.:o

As I understand it (i.e. very poorly) it allows combinations of criteria to be specified - a bit like SQL but with a semi-graphical interface.

This is true....but I still enjoy working on layouts...

As a route builder I spend countless hours searching for a building or other feature I just know is in there somewhere. In TRS04 all content was broken up by region etc, so if I knew the ground texture I wanted was under 'Britain' or the building I couldn't find was 'Polish' I could at least cut down the search. In TRS06/09 however everything in the default menus is in one long list only searchable by it's username. The content filter allows content to be broken down into many many sub-groups with editable search parameters, so finding stuff in 09 is actually easier than in 04. Or at least it will be if I put the effort into creating and saving meaningful searches. It is a very handy feature indeed. To a dedicated route builder who doesn't spend very much time in 'Driver' it is actually significantly more attractive than the new graphics engine. Route builders are strange that way.....

Thanks, Andy. Sounds as if the filter is a great addition. I will start using it.
BTW, scenario creators are also a strange lot:) .

Please can we go back to how the forum was intended and only have one thread per subject. It seems like every other week we get the same old gripes and groans - "If I'd known 2009 was like this, I'd never have bought it!"

Please, guys, if you're disgruntled with Trainz , do a forum search and join an existing thread. It is irksome to keep on seeing new topics with the same old gripes.

We all know that every version of Trainz has been buggy when first released - tell me of some software that isn't! There comes a point in the world of commerce and industry, where a business has to start recouping its product development costs, and as long as the product is saleable, whyever not? The Trainz community, as a whole, have been very good at reporting bugs in new software, and Auran have always been very good at fixing themn with Service Packs. Sometimes the more nerdy Trainz types have even worked out how to do their own fixes and enlightened the rest of us on the forum.

The recouping costs concept holds particularly true during a worldwide recession which Dubai's insolvency could plunge us back into.

It is not my intention to be nasty to the original poster or those that have jumped on board, so please don't take offence guys. Those of us that have been Auran customers from the outset will remember that the company nearly folded 5 or 6 years ago due to the massive development costs of some game or other. (was it "Rage" or "Fury" or something like that?!?) Naturally, the business brains behind Auran (Bruce?) will be very cautious not to let that situation happen again! As someone who gets an awful lot of pleasure from Trainz, I will support them and I have my advance order in for TRS2010 which, for sure, will have glitches, despite the release having been delayed to try to sort the bugs out. I certainly don't expect all the bugs to be squashed before the release date - in fact, I kind of look forward to the Service Packs as they have me wondering what little delights will be added! (I will never forget the thrill of seeing the carriagfe doors open and the carriages fill up with passengers when the TRS2004 Passenger Pack was introduced! Funny how we take that for granted now!)

I keep a copy of TC3 on my computer which is, arguably, the most stable Trainz platform. If I want stability, I go play on that! As Trainz Classics 3 is now pretty cheap, and Mike 10 and kemplen are still producing new stuff for it every week, I would recommend any UK modellers obtain a copy too!
