Trainz 12

Hi I am new to the forum and trainz I was just wondering what this is like compared to Microsoft Train Simulator and Railworks

Graphically it's improving with every version, and 12 is the best so far. As far as building a route, it's hands down the best of the three you've mentioned, and there are loads and loads of free content for the program that is being updated to work with the latest version. You may want to purchase an FCT (First Class Ticket) for speedy downloads, but it beats laying out time after time for payware for the other two programs. And speaking of payware, there are fine pieces available for Trainz in locos, rolling stock, scenery and even whole prototypical routes.

All in all, I'd say that Trainz compares very favorably to those other two!

Only one man's opinion, but I bought Trainz and MSTS on the same day so many years ago it doesn't matter, but I have pretty much every version of Trainz since and MSTS is uninstalled so long ago I couldn't find the disks if I wanted to.

Railworks has some pretty good content - mostly payware but Trainz seems to be going that direction anyway - and the lighting is awesome. I don't have 12 yet (the disks are on their way) but in screencaps it looks like the lighting in Trainz might be catching up.

As a route building platform Trainz beats the other rail sims hands down...

Andy :)

Having owned the above-mentioned and Trainz since 2004 and of course I can't speak to railworks2 but I do have railworks.

I firmly believe TS12 is the finest of the Trainz franchise. I created the following screenshot in just about 4 or 5 min. granted using payware grass and a payware locomotive but the track and the texture are both built-in to TS12…

That's JointedRail's built-in track and texture, absolutely stunning compared to any other version of Trainz…

Train Simulator 2012 may be great but I can't figure out how to open it. I have downloaded the setup-2b.bin file of about 1.5 gig but what do I do next? Double clicking on it says Windows doesn't know how to open.

It's by far the best of the three, from what I've seen and played. I've been playing MSTS since the day it was released. I still like the graphics, but they are definitely dated. It's easily playable though. While I've seen RW's graphics and played a demo of it, Trainz can and does easily beat it; it's just a question of the assets used in a route or scene. Nor do I find it very playable. Trainz is really two games in one - the train Driver portion and the route/session builder, Surveyor. I actually find the creation aspect more fun than running trains.

RW is also only available through Steam, so at best you will get a ganked up version. While Trainz is sold through Steam too, you at least can get it direct from Auran and other places without any of the problems Steam introduces.

You are supposed to download all of the setup files (which includes multiple .bin files, including that one, plus the setup.exe file), and then you run the setup.exe file. ;)

Also, it is a good idea to use a download manager to download the files, to help increase your chances of the files downloading completely and correctly.

Regards.

There are 3 more .bin files and a setup.exe which you also must download, all to the same directory. Trust me, there's not gonna fit a sim this awesome in 1.5 gigs! :D

Six files altogether including set up setup-1a.bin,setup-1b.bin,setup-2a.bin,setup-2b.bin and setup-3a.bin along with setup.exe

Then you put them all into the same directory and run setup.exe as an administrator and follow the prompts.

Thanks to all for the quick reply. My downloads are extremely slow averaging about 550kps i/o and sometimes time out requiring restart. Will the "1st Class ticket" speed this up? Will Auran allow me to cancel the download and get the discs?

Thanks, Dave. I did use the download manager and downloaded all 6. When I went to install, I got an error message while running setup - "NV3 Games\TS12\builtin\ts12C.ja is corrupted." Does anyone know in which of the 6 humgous .bin files this is located so I don't have to spend 3 more days downloading them all?

Thanks again everyone for the help.

Thanks. This is a big help. someone suggested a parity counter which I downloaded and used to check. Two of the .bin files had bad counts. I am downloading those two again. We'll see if that works.

Google FCIV.EXE, it's available at Microsoft's website. Download it and follow the instructions for use. Run it in each downloaded Trainz file and compare it to the results for each file below. Any result that doesn't match what's posted by NikkiA means that file is corrupt and you will have to redownload it.

It's been covered extensively that you should use a download manager, but be sure it doesn't contain adware/spyware, since a lot of them do.
