Train Songs

And to go back a few more years, when I bought the game Railroad Tycoon II, it came with a CD of instrumental train music. I still listen to that.

I actually discovered this wonderful song by Ian Anderson while driving to the Orrville Autumn Express train excursion last year. Anderson is the famous flute-playing front man for the band Jethro Tull. The song is from his 1983 Walk Into Light, his first solo album.

Here I am at the end of the day
with a cup of cold coffee
from the station buffet.
On Trains, on Trains I seem
to spend my life on Trains.

See the blue suit banker in the ticket line.
Got an Evening Standard with Playboy
hidden behind.
On Trains, on Trains he seems
to spend his life on Trains.

Time after time
Was I just dreaming?
Did I help you aboard.
Full passenger service--
Let me help with the door
Sit down take the weight off your feet.
There`s a train-load of people I`d like
you to meet
On Trains, on Trains we love
to spend our lives on Trains.

Join the secret world of Trains.
Feel the pleasure. Touch the pain.
Drift into yesterday.

Once and again
I was just thinking.
We could meet sometime
on the 17.30 where
I usually find
my friends at the end of the day.
May we pay your fare, lady?
We should like you to stay
in our train. On Trains--
you`ll have to spend your life
on Trains.

I hear there`s an office party on the 18.05
You`ll be home for Christmas if they
take you alive from the Train
Those Trains, we have to spend our lives
on Trains.

Once and again
I was just thinking
we could meet any time
on number two platform
where I usually find
my friends at the end of the day
on Trains, Trains, Trains.
Okay I know that they do sing about trains in that song, but that song was just downright terrible in my opinion. Hard to believe Ian Anderson had anything to do with that. A much better song by him and Jethro Tull is Locomotive Breath. Also if no one mentioned it yet, was Night Train by Guns N Roses. Though the "Night Train" reference had to do with their vices and decadence they were into back in the 80's.

One After 909 (Lennon-Mccartney-Beatles)
A Passage To Bangkok (Lee-Lifeson-Rush)
City of New Orleans (Arlo Guthrie)
Rock Island Line ( Lonnie Donegan)

First four that pop into my mind...

On side note: Plenty of songs have train sounds, while not being about trains such as 'Caroline No' By The Beach Boys, featuring an SP train horn blasting on the CA coast...

Here are some I can come up with for you -

* Last train to Clarkesville - The Monkees [1967}
* Train to skaville - The Ethiopians {1967}
* Love train - The O'jays {1973}
* Night train - Visage (UK New romantics band) {1982}
* Waiting for a train - Flash & The Pan {1983}
* Waiting for the ghost train - Madness {1986}
* Riding on a train - The Pasadenas {1988}
* Long train running - Bananarama {1993}

# (Waiting for) the ghost train - Madness

This too....

Also, not directly related, but here is 'Let it Be' live in Montreal (2013), dedicated to the residents of Lac-Megantic, QC. You should google: 'Paul Mccartney Lac-Megantic for an interesting story.

Wow, I can't believe no one has mentioned "The Wabash Cannonball". My opinion, but Boots Randolph's version sounds the best.

Maybe not your idea of a train song, but a piece of music in which a train plays an important role in the video clip: Queen - Breakthru!

If I can believe the comments on YouTube, the engine in the clip is the "8F class steam locomotive 2-8-0 no' 3822".

A long time ago, when I was a little kid, I used to watch this show called I Love Toy Trains. In the beginning three episodes, they sang a lot of railroad songs while goofing off, running expensive LIONEL trains into each other and totaling them, and showing unnessasary clips of circus stuff.
Later, in episodes 4 through 10, (the last one) it went into more and more detail about the value and fun of O-scale model railroading. (but they still sang railroad songs and they still goofed off, trashing countless LIONEL engines.)
