Train Songs

There sure are a lot of songs about trains! Back in the day that was the way to travel. I don't hear too many songs about rich folks riding the rails. I don't spend much time listening to music these days, but when I do it's mostly blues and for some reason blue grass (I used to hate that!). Most are about wishing they could afford a fancy ticket, finding a way to travel for free, back breaking work, trains taking their woman away, or on a little brighter note, bringing her back home. Hard times for sure. I don't think I could have survived back in the "good" old days!

Cheers....Rick

I haven't seen anybody reference the 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' authored and sung by Gordon Lightfoot, sooooooooooo many mooooooons ago! It's all about those souls who built the Canadian transcontinental railroad..................Novi's they called them.

The railroad goes through the middle of the house....................I'm singing this song in the middle of the house.

Hi cvkiwi,
What about "good morning America" either by J. Cash or Arlo Guthrie; there are so many .
Actually, the title is City of New Orleans.
Hank Snow did many great train songs. He was a hobo early on. You may want to do some research into old country music. Train songs were very popular at one time.

Shame on me. I live about 15 miles from Waterville, Maine where MeC's #470 is parked and I forgot to mention Dick Curless' song "470"

Here's one called Station Approach by a British band called Elbow. It was inspired by the approach to Manchester Piccadilly station (hence the built-up scenery near the end of the video). It has a rather interesting video featuring the band members in stop-motion form onboard a 00-Gauge train. Features one hell of a crescendo as the train moves through a tunnel and then blasts out the other side with a massive BOOM. It gets my heart racing every time. Enjoy :)

Ian Anderson's TRAINS song

I actually discovered this wonderful song by Ian Anderson while driving to the Orrville Autumn Express train excursion last year. Anderson is the famous flute-playing front man for the band Jethro Tull. The song is from his 1983 Walk Into Light, his first solo album.

Here I am at the end of the day
with a cup of cold coffee
from the station buffet.
On Trains, on Trains I seem
to spend my life on Trains.

See the blue suit banker in the ticket line.
Got an Evening Standard with Playboy
hidden behind.
On Trains, on Trains he seems
to spend his life on Trains.

Time after time
Was I just dreaming?
Did I help you aboard.
Full passenger service--
Let me help with the door
Sit down take the weight off your feet.
There`s a train-load of people I`d like
you to meet
On Trains, on Trains we love
to spend our lives on Trains.

Join the secret world of Trains.
Feel the pleasure. Touch the pain.
Drift into yesterday.

Once and again
I was just thinking.
We could meet sometime
on the 17.30 where
I usually find
my friends at the end of the day.
May we pay your fare, lady?
We should like you to stay
in our train. On Trains--
you`ll have to spend your life
on Trains.

I hear there`s an office party on the 18.05
You`ll be home for Christmas if they
take you alive from the Train
Those Trains, we have to spend our lives
on Trains.

Once and again
I was just thinking
we could meet any time
on number two platform
where I usually find
my friends at the end of the day
on Trains, Trains, Trains.
