Track Plans

Ca Plane Pour Moi
I wish to create a one board layout with a decent trackplan there are only two rules for it:

It must be british
It must have a lot of operational interest

anyone got any ideas for a trackplan?

I think you know basicly what you're lopoking for. It's been my experience that the best ideas come from within one's own imagination.

Why one board, that is only 720m x 720m? A rather small area. And don't forget the minimum radius for curves.

I remember reading in model train magazines year ago where they would have such contests to build a layout on one sheet (4'x8') of plywood. When space is at a premium this was a worthy goal and the ingenuity of some builders was amazing.

Hi klambert --

Perhaps download and try my "IntenCity" route for ideas. You will find the track plan does not have to be over complex to give good operation potential.

As a Britisher you might also like to try one of the sessions called "IntenCity 1a Session 6". It uses a Castle class locomotive + BR rolling stock. Do read the text under the thumbnail - because of the frequent AI this is quite a challenging session. Or go here:

There are only a couple of downloads needed from the Download Station for the route and session. All the rest is built into TS2010.

Take a look at my one base board Elko and Lincoln on the DLS. there are at least 3 versions, all of wich work in TS2009. This may give you some insperation.

Two of my one-board layouts, RM 1156 UK and RM 1156 France, will show you how I 'translated' one of Cyril Freezer's plans (from Railway Modeller, November 1956, hence the names). This was done only as an exercise - naturally I prefer to use the much greater possibilities offered by Trainz and multiple baseboards. These were made for TRS2004 so you will need to tick the appropriate box on the DLS, and the UK layout uses only TRS2004 built-in content (another exercise!) so no downloads needed.

For inspiration, any plan by Cyril Freezer - he published hundreds during his life, one a week when editor of Railway Modeller - also books including Model Railway Track Plans published by Patrick Stephens.

For my thoughts on using model railway layout plans but taking advantage of the (almost) unlimited possibilities in Trainz, see http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/raywhiley/layout.plans.html

Totally agree Ray. I've had a lot of fun adapting a plan by CJ Freezer for an N gauge layout designed for a 16ft by 9ft space and based loosely off Exeter Central. I know some people look down their noses at 'model' layouts in Trainz, but I think it looks quite good - I may even upload it one day!
