What is the unit of measurement trainz uses to measure how steep track gradients are?

And also how do I convert this from the unit to the british system of gradient measuring. For example I need to covert a 1in30 gradiant into the trainz gradient units. The track I need to covert to 1in30 is 130 metres long. Can anyone help?

Trainz uses the US % system.

So 1 in 30 = 3.33%. Just divide the numerator (1) by the denominator (30) and multiply by 100 to get the conversion.

I use this site http://www.trainman.id.au/grade.htm

It will give you gradients in the 1 in x format, or as a percentage gradient as used in Trainz. I've used it for 80 odd miles of route gradients and works a treat.

Thanks that looks extremely useful, just wondering though for the 1in x grade is it using imperial?

Units don't matter. For example, 1 in 50 means a rise of 1 unit vertically in 50 units horizontally. It matters not what the units are- inches, feet, miles, metres, light-years - the gradient is the same, in this case 2%, which is why quoting them as percentages seems easier to some

Where y is the % and x is the the horizontal units i.e. 1 in 120 would mean that x=120

Example 1

1 in 155

%=100/155 = 0.64516...
%=0.64516

Example 2

1 in 1,320

%= 100/1,320 = 0.7575
%=0.7575
