Topography Problems

Hi, I'm a relative newcomer to Trainz and having a few problems with topography. Despite my efforts, most of my hills have very sharp edges and look very square especially when close up. Also I keep getting small white bush-like objects appear randomly as the train goes past certain areas of the layout. Would be grateful for any advice on rounding the hills and getting rid of the bushes. Thanks.

By default the base maps have a 10-by-10 size. Start with switching that to 5-by-5. To do so, go in Surveyor to the Topology tab and right-click on the "Add Ground (x)" button. You can then pick the grid size. You can alter the basemaps already in place, but you might have to check them and re-paint some area's. This smaller grid will make it possible to have less edgy hills.

I cant help you with this "bushes" effect you are talking about since I dont understand what you mean. Maybe post a screenshot?

Assuming this is what you mean

The bushes are built into a certain texture in TS12, it is called "grass 2b" If you replace this texture with a different one the bushes should go away.

Thanks for the info on the hills, will give it a try with a test layout to see if I can make a better job it.
With regard to the phantom "bushes" they have not been added as a texture or object but simply appear and disappear at random times and places on the layout. I have managed to get a screenshot when they suddenly appeared in Surveyor mode but they also appear in Driver mode as well.
Unfortunately I don't know how to upload it for you to see. Posting permissions underneath this thread state "You may not post attachments" IMG code is On. I'd be grateful if you could help me upload the picture as per yours above. Thanks.

The grass problem is due to a clutter mesh being added to a ground texture there were two or three of them if I remember correctly grass2b was one of them can't remember the others I'm afraid but I think they were created by Dave Drake - dmdrake, he grass is actually attatched to the Ground texture. Covering the texture with another one should get rid of the things, if that doesn't work delete it from Content manager and use the remove missing assets in Surveyor, replacing ground textures using replace assets is a bad idea in TS12 as there is a bug that create deep holes all over the area of the texture you replaced. Hopefully this will be fixed in SP1.

Hills, can be controlled by using the lowest sensitivity and largest radius, that avoids sharp peaks appearing. I advise doing a lot of practice on a blank board to get it right.

Thanks for your help, will have a practice with the hills. I'm still not sure about the bush things but will try to upload the screenshot and hope someone recognises them.

http://www.imageshack.us/ to upload an image, click view full size. Right click on the image, select "Copy Image" from the menu. Change to the reply window here, CTRL V to paste.

For the pointy hills use the plateau tool set to different radius sizes, practice with it for a while to smooth out terrain.

Thanks for the upload info which I used to upload the required jpeg picture. Unfortunately when I posted it onto the forum it informed me that I hadn't got permission to post this type of reply and simply deleted the post. Having looked at the bottom of the screen it states "You may not post attachments code is On.

Any ideas on how I get round this?

You don't attach images to your post, you have to include a link to where the image is stored on a publicly visible server.
Code:
[IMG]image link here[/IMG]

Thanks for your reply Martin but I'm a bit of a newcomer to Trainz and one of the previous replies above (gg14835) has attached a picture of some bushes for me and a further reply from (sniper297) explains how to copy an image directly to the forum using the above imageshack link to upload the image. This is the reply I followed and managed to copy the image to the post ok but was then informed of the error telling me I didn't have permission to post attachments. There must be a way of changing the permissions because loads of posts have images included as opposed to links to an image. However, I'd be interested to know how to obtain the necessary link and whether the above imageshack could be used as a publicly visible server. PS Please note that in this post I actually quoted the full imageshack link as per sniper 297's reply and was again informed of an error stating I didn't have permission to post this type of reply. So presumably I can't attach images or links at the moment.

I find using a host like Photobucket is easier than Imageshack, for all the pics..It provides you with the link you need to post pics..

... I didn't have permission to post attachments.
No one does.
There must be a way of changing the permissions because loads of posts have images included as opposed to links to an image. ... .
Those inline images are also links directly to image the hosting server. The message shows the image instead of the link code. It is also possible to have a linked set of words that open a new tab or window to show an image.

At last, I've managed to produce the screenshot, thanks for all your help - will know how to do it in future.

Going back to my original post about white bush-like objects you can see them all around the trees. They aren't part of the texture and randomly appear and disappear. These appeared when working in Surveyor mode but when I zoomed out and then in again they had disappeared. They also randomly appear in Driver mode as a train passes round the track. Just wondered if anyone knew what they were, they aren't a great nuisance but would rather they weren't there.

They are attached to the ground texture, to get rid of them you need to delete it from content manager or over paint it in surveyor with a different texture, need to make sure its well covered over though or they reappear. Probably a seemed like a good idea at the time thing that ended up annoying the hell out of many of us. :hehe:

At last I've managed to upload a screenshot so thanks for all the help. Going back to one of my original problems (ie white bush-like objects) you can see them around the base of the trees. I'm sure they are not part of the texture because when I zoomed out of the above Surveyor screenshot and then zoomed back again they had disappeared. They also randomly appear and disappear on the landscape in Driver mode when a train is travelling around the track. Although they aren't hugely important I'd rather they weren't there so would be grateful if anyone knows how to get rid of them.

Please ignore the above reply as its a duplicate of an earlier one. I thought the first one hadn't been added for some reason, hadn't realised it was on page 2. Sorry.
