Tomshardware report on 2D Graphics

It appears that 2D performance of the newer cards can be much slower than some of the older cards.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2d-windows-gdi,2539.html

In particular a GeForce 7050 on motherboard graphic solution appears to outperform both the GTX 285 and ATI 5870 cards.

Does it matter well if you run CorelDraw or AutoCAD under Win 7 on an ATI card it helps if you turn hardware acceleration off but read the article.

I'm not certain what it means for Trainz performance.

I would guess that there's no effect directly since except for its menus Trainz is 3D, but there might be an impact on Trainz' performance from Aero and any 2D programs with open windows behind Trainz.

A good general rule is to disable each of the optional Windows eye candy features unless you really really want them. In WinXP: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance - Settings > Visual Effects.

Perhaps any current card is more than powerful enough for 2D?

If you read the article it would appear that certain graphics functions are much faster on the older cards and that if you disable certain things in Win 7 things go faster. Probably more on the content creation side than Trainz itself.

ATI thinks they maybe able to do a driver fix.

It does discuss the fact that Vista does not allow appear to allow direct hardware calls which can hit performance. It also shows how to write a program that can kill Vista.
