I know this has almost nothing to do with Trainz, but this to me is the best way to learn more about a country is when you talk to those who live there.

In my Geography class I have a 97.8 average our last grade for this quarter is a report about a country, well, I chose Australia my favorite country. The report has to have in-depth information on my country.

So to get the most "in-depth" info I can get, I am asking you who live in Australia to share with me more about Australia.

If you could post info on these topics or even something else about Australia I am unaware of.
  • What food originated from Australia, as to my understanding most of it has a European style.
  • What is the Economic status there and other details about the economy.
  • How the Public Sector (Goverment) influence Australian society? Does it have more of a socialist control?
  • Share stories about things in Australia that textbooks and websites do not say.
  • Famous local events/landmarks.
  • How does the Transportation system set-up? Is it privately owned or goverment controlled?
I know that this does not fit into Trianz and might possibly start a political discussion, but I really need this A so please try to keep in friendly.

OK...I guess its just a typo but in line 2 of your post you mention that you have chosen your favorite country of Austria and then you ask the readers to share information on Australia :hehe:

How does the Transportation system set-up? Is it privately owned or goverment controlled?

at present with the exception of Qld all freight railways are privately owned, but if current plans by the qld government go ahead parts of the QR network will be sold off to private operators.

In NSW Cityrail is responsible for the operation of the Suburban and interurban services. The area served by Cityrail is bounded by Goulburn and Kiama in the south Lithgow on the west of the Blue Mountains Dungog to the North and Scone to the Northwest. Kiama Lithgow and Newcastle and Campelltown are the linits of Electric operations with all services operated by double deck suburban or interurban electrics. North of Newcastle all services are operated by Diesel Railcar. Countrylink operate services Sydney to Broken Hill/Melbourne/Canberra/Griffith/Grafton/Casino/Brisbane/Armidale/Moree/Dubbo. These services are operated by either a Explorer rail car set or XPT set.

Great Southern Railways operate three trains these being The Overland linking Melbourne and Adelaide the Ghan linking Adelaide to Darwin and the Indian Pacific linking Sydney and Perth. GSR is a private operator.

Prime Minster Chifley was never a Locomotive drive infact he was only ever an acting driver he last job was driving the Bathurst Yard shunter and my Grand Pop said thank god he did a better job as a PM than he did at running a loco.

I could tell you how Pop described his skills as a fireman on the shovel but think I would get banned fronm the fourms :D if i used Pop's words

Mate no matter what you say we do not ride Kangaroos to school, We ride Emu's there fast and better on the environment...

Bondi Beach is another of Sydneys big things.
 
Also, Australia's not socialist. Its democratic. We have a Prime Minister.

We also have states like the USA and 2 territories, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and the Northern Territory. But you probably knew that. :P

Some interesting facts about Australia...

- Bob Hawke, ex Australian Prime Minister made it into the Guniess Book of Records due to a drinking contest...

- There is apporximately 1500 species of Australian spiders.

- Australia has the world's largest population of camels that only have one hump.

- Australia is home to the world's largest cattle ranch, being over 30 000 square kilometres, it is the same size as Belgium.

- Melbourne has the second largest Greek population of any city in the world, second only to Athens.

- If the Ghan Railway line wasn't properly restrained, the welded rails would expand from the heat at 200km/h, so much so that the line would extend 1.1km into the sea at Darwin.

- Sharks are immune to all known diseases.

- There are 150 million sheep in Australia, compared to a human population of only about 22 million...

Yep, EMU is a kind of electric rail here. I live near the (formerly walkers co.)
EDI/Bombardier rail vehicle factory in Maryborough, Queensland. A large majority of Australian trains are made there and osmetimes export to African countries. Rail systems are government and private companys and that causes problems with having Queensland state having narrow guage and the rest of Australia on Broad gauge. IF you see lots of bad things happening here, they're not. The way media works here is that every single bad event, mostly car crashs and house fires that spread a "massive" 78 centimetres away from the stove, gets exposed and nearly never is there some good news shown publicly which, to a tourist, makes us Aussies look horrible. Australia has plenty of Aboriginal culture around but there is no white culture as Australia is actaully a multicultural hub (Melbourne has the second highest concentration of greeks in the world for just one example). And no, Australian Prime Minister doesn't sit all day naked in a tyre, dispite what Matt Groening has to say. You can also thnak AUtralia for numerous Video games, including Bioshock, Destroy all humans!, and the Total War series. (Auran is in Brisbane, Queensland's capital, they actually invented a game called Dark Reign, a technological parent to Command and Conquer)
