Time to Step back and think

I installed out of the box 2010 recently and applied all the patches. It is amazing looking at the forums how many problems are out there.
In my case "Detroit" had the track missing (dashed lines) and some items were broken or missing from inbuilt routes. Hold on a minute I just purchased this and it is faulty. I am stunned that a new installation has problems this can only show that it was not tested properly. When I started the game after importing content from 2009 I had 1836 items needing updates. I clicked on the page and needed to download each item. I got fed up with this as I could see that it would take 15.3 hours to do it this way. I did see Shanes suggestion on his website and it worked. It downloaded 500 meg of items. I did put an out of the box on one of my spare pc's. Imported the content after the 1836 items had been updated from the other pc and yes you guessed it around 1800 updates are required. Another 500 meg?
It is possible that many of the items are from third party people and no way should they add them to the DLS unless all the KUID parts are actualy on the DLS, that's not a responsible thing to do, If you put anything on the DLS make sure it is correct and works. Putting on items that need payware is not clever unless the full site info as to where to get it is detailed. If it will not work on say 2009 then say so. If there is a license issue which is not correct unless you have a world wide license, then keep away and start your own company selling train games. On the possitive side there is some great work done by many contributers. Is there similar problems with 2012. Untill Amazon give 2012 away as they have with 2010 at
less than £10 UK then I will have to wait.

I agree with your sentiments, although I am glad that one of my suggestions came in useful.

I've noticed some assets that do not work correctly in TS2009 SP4 (which is equivalent to TS2010 minus the layers tab and the Speedtrees).

One of the problems, I guess is, many of the DLS objects have been made for different versions of Trainz, hence these might be working or might have worked perfect in the version of Trainz they were made for. Unfortunately, "compatibility mode" in TS10 does not mean these objects will be compatible, they only MIGHT be. As almost every new version of Trainz is slightly different, some versions are even with major changes in the code, that is where the problem lays. Old version of Trainz had even error checking turned off to some extend, so faulty older content would install correctly without Trainz getting a "Hissy Fit".

This has changed with the later versions of TC/TS, which more or less now need exact configurations and building of content. Unfortunately, there is not that much new content around to fill all needs one might have when setting up/creating a route or just playing around with one's favorite older versions of engines/rolling stock and scenery items, as no new versions of these are made yet.

Cheers

You may not be aware the the DLS is in the process of being "cleaned up", and updated content is being uploaded daily to replace older content. When that happens, items used in the games become obsolete, making it necessary to download the updated content. You may have bought the game new, but when it was made those updates did not exist.
