"TigerInTheTank" is a session for UrbanIndustRail 8a.

Your task is to transport Tiger tanks from the Foundry where repair work has been undertaken to the unloading ramp at Invercargill (or, for the more adventurous, to Picton).

The initial set up at the Loco Depot looks like this:

The first task is to make up the train in the correct sequence of, from south to north, Class 37, guards van, flat wagons and crane.

The immediate problem is that the Class 37 and even one item of rolling stock will not fit on the traverser. So you must use the little D2400 shunter, and even then the traverser will only accommodate the loco + one flat car or loco + part of the crane consist.

It's worth while spending a minute or two working out how to do the shunting most effectively.

Eventually you should have the train looking like this:

Take the seat in the cab of the Class 37. Remember that you can swap driving ends in a double ended locomotive by going into Cab View (press the 1-key), then pressing Alt-C.

Couple the Class 37 onto the head of the train, that is, the guards van which is needed for this shunt operation. Perform a full brake application and release to make sure that all the air hoses are connected.

Radio to the Dispatcher "This is Bill; request permission to access the main line, over."

"Roger your request, Bill; good luck, out."

Ease forward onto the main line, setting the points as you go. Reverse up the main line, northwards, to the Foundry. You may have to give way to an AI train at the lift bridge.

Ease back into the Foundry, placing the crane so that it is on the track next to the track that is adjacent to the loading platform at the gantry crane.

Now position the flat wagons on the track next to the loading platform. The crane should be used to load the flat wagons. (Ok - no questions please about how a manual crane with a SWL of perhaps 10 tons will do this. But, hey, it's both a game and a simulation.) You will find that a Tiger tank will load onto a flat wagon when the wagon is stationary between the yellow markers.

When all the tanks are loaded, head south, again giving way to AI trainz at all squeeze points. Just before the lift bridge immediately south of the Harbor you will find a trailing point that needs to be reset for the main line.

Take time to look at your load. To keep within the loading gauge the Tigers are fitted with narrow transit tracks. The full width tracks are carried with the tank and will be used once the tanks are unloaded. Note also the tie down chains:

Sweep past the Steel Works and Coking Plant and then take the right turnouts to the container depot at Invercargill:

In the depot there is a run round loop. Detach the brake van from the train and use the loop to run round the train. Propel the flat wagons so that the wagon at the far end stops abutting the unloading ramp:

The two yellow markers under the wagon at the unloading ramp indicate a ProtoLARS track. After a slight wait the Tigers will unload in sequence:

Collect the guards van, make up the train and store the train in one of the sidings. Move the Class 37 to the locomotive siding near the main station building and report for further orders.

Teleport back to the little shunter, move out onto the main line and collect the crane. You will find that it may be a slow journey. Store the crane somewhere in the Locomotive Depot yard.

Well done!

If you would prefer a longer trip with the Class 37 and Tigers, the LARS track at the gantry crane next to the unloading ramp in Picton yard at the northern end of this route has been configured to unload the tanks.

You will find further details of the session and map in this thread:
