He looks he is just stopping so that he does not trip the crossing. There is a whistle post there that would be 1/4 mile from the crossing.

If he was pulling so hard where is the black smoke that should have been coming out of the exhaust?

Not necessarily. I have seen some other vids of trains stalling, one was a KCS one that two of the 4 engines weren't working, and there wasn't any black smoke.

well, just because he was giving everything he got doesn't mean he was in throttle 8. usually if you train is going to stall and your moving that slow, you are just trying to keep rolling. trying to find the right notch to be in so you keep moving without spinning your wheels. and after a certain point (which we all saw in this case) you realize that if your not making it up the hill, and you see a curve, you are definatly NOT going to make it around that. really, i think the guy did what was right because there was no way he would of ever made that
