I can't seem to do what all the other people in trainz can do with the edit in explorer i click on it and all that it does is bring me to an empty space with no files .... i can't even reskin anything
does anyone know whats wrong with my computer .. kinda want to do reskins hopefully...:p

You need to be in content manager, r/click on an asset (not a built in one) an select edit in explorer. Best use the clone option first if it's your first effort.
For skinning and weathering see one of sniper297's recent posts, he's left some links with how to's.

Main problem he has is he won't listen to good advice - I told him when he flooded the forums his first week that he needed to slow down, learn to do basic computer operations, THEN start downloading and tinkering with stuff.

"i click on it and all that it does is bring me to an empty space with no files"

Wild guess, Windows 7 UAC, he doesn't have a clue what it is or how to configure it. He probably also has Trainz in the default C:\Program Files (X86) folder, which the UAC guards like a junkyard dog.

...which the UAC guards like a junkyard dog.
Is that the reason why it only wants to edit items with bones in them. :hehe:

Sorry, I couldn't resist... ;)

Greetings from sunny Amsterdam,

Jan

Well, Your Wild guess is correct but it isn't necessary to make a" mockery "out of what i'm trying to do which in my case the brainy people on this game are some of the most rude.... anyway, The reason that people even get on this Australian forum anyhow is to get decent advice with come clean explanation behind the source and no one can seem to get it here and everyone blows up their blogs saying that this place is so magical with friendly service when all i get is people who know it all and explain it in a sense of a know it all and guess what that doesnt work on people with autism there pal.... Try explaining it and take some of your time to help a person in need instead of floating your fingers around on this excuse of a perfect simmulator.. thank you

ps: the windows x87 folder is common sense to know in my case because anyone can come up and look through all of my post and see that i have mentioned the whereabouts once before.

I often "Edit in Explorer" when creating reskins, and I've done it on my Desktop in XP and my Laptop with 7. Open CM, then list the item you want to Edit on the main window. If it's a built in you have to be sure that it's not locked. I highlight the asset and right mouse click "Edit in Explorer" and another window opens up (the folder for the asset in the editing window). I copy the folder from there and paste it on my desktop, close the window and the revert the asset in CM. Now I have a copy on the desktop and can edit it with my graphics manipulation program, change the username by editing the config file, and change the kuid by doing the same. When it's all good, I drag it into the CM window and check it out in game, then take a screenshot to make the thumbnail, resize it, and then open my new asset for editing in explorer and save the new thumbnail screenshot to the folder. Then I close the folder and commit the new asset.
Are you not able to do those steps, or is something preventing you from doing those steps?

You're welcome, I didn't know if you had already been told the steps or not. If you have any more trouble, post back, and I'll try to clear it up for you.

My mockery is always rude, that's the only flavor I got.

I'm a single parent, I've been raising an autistic kid by myself for 23 years.
I spent 10 years working as a teacher's aide at Duke Ellington Elementary in Chicago, mostly with kids who had learning disabilities.
I also spent 4 years working as an Autism Line Therapist for Goodwill Industries.
I learned computer basics in US Navy Avionics School at Memphis Naval Air Station in 1978.

I'm telling you that you need to learn basic operations for your computer system before you start downloading stuff that has a good chance of screwing up your game or hacking files that might screw up your game, if you want to believe that I don't know what I'm talking about then good luck to you.

We've also tried to help you on other issues, but you don't always listen. We're trying to have you slow down a bit so you don't wreck your install. There's nothing like having to reinstall something numerous times. I say this in the worst sense, and not out of pleasure. For a program like this, which really is complicated, you don't want to spend a lot of time installing, patching, and hopefully recovering your hard work you had done previously.

We're also sorry if this seems to be too complicated, but unfortunately this is the case with a lot of things today. Why do TV remote controls have a gazillion buttons on them when all you want to do is change the channel and lower the volume? I dread the day when an elderly family friend gets a new TV or her remote's batteries decide they've had enough of it all and die. I get the call... This call is the kind that lasts for hours followed by a visit that lasts for hours to show her how to use the remote all over again.

Anyway, back to topic.

The reason for the open for edit in Explorer is this, and I apologize if this is too complicated. All of the Trainz assets, your downloads and built-in items, are not directly accessible by you. In the olden days with TRS2004 and prior, you could do that. You could find the asset and go in and edit for your heart's content. The problem with this model was every edit required deleting of program temporary files to make the program find the items you changed. The fact that you have to manually delete files in the program's folder meant that people would end up deleting the wrong stuff and have to reinstall, which can become a whole new nightmare unto its own. There was a third-party utility called Trainz Objectz that helped with the editing and this program did a find job, but due to many reasons it was never updated for the newer versions of Trainz.

So starting with TRS2006 and up, then Auran and now N3V Software, developed the Content Manager. Content Manager refers to everything downloaded by a location in a database. This single file, named Assets.tdx, keeps track of your content. The files for the individual items exist on your hard drive, but they are in a compressed form, meaning you cannot edit them directly. Content Manager allows you to see what they contain, and allows you to edit the content.

Editing in Explorer is fairly easy as Ed (Euphod) explained. I simply right-click on the item I wish to edit, choose Edit from Explorer, and voila! The asset's contents are visible in human form rather than in Trainz data form.
When done editing, I then close the Windows Explorer window, and then commit the item. Committing adds the changed item back to the database. This is the step that required deleting temporary files in the older version of Trainz. Today the committing takes care of this step and is a lot safer for your program.

If we seem like we're giving you a hard time, or are teasing you. take it in stride. Would you rather be among a bunch of grumps who don't bother to answer you because you're a newbie? I've seen that in many forums where the new guy gets the boot, literally for asking a question. As you've seen, you'll get the jousting and teasing here along with the information you need.

I hope I explained this well.

John

Thank you to all who have helped with this, and sorry for snapping but i just tend to get mad when someone doesn't treat a newbie with a tad of respect to try and get me where i need to be but anyway thanks all !

I dunno if anyone else is bothered by snapping, it don't bother me a bit. And my objective is always to get the newbie to where he needs to be, respect is only available at additional cost, void where prohibited, no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.
