Most folks know that I mainly produce modern layouts or modified modern layouts...so I got the urge to finally make a steam-diesel transition period layout using Phiskene's excellent 2019 The Mann, Phrom, Laramee layout as my base. It will be either the C&O or Virginian RR
I wanted it to be a coal hauler so I added 3 mines, I took out the logging industries and stockyards, added 2 Grain Elevators and Petro Tanks as the primary businesses with some warehouses for general goods to be added soon. Passenger trains can be sued as well for the added stations.
As you can see this just a prelim of setting up the structures, may switch them out for others but this is the feeling I want for it, I also added the completed side to the roundhouse just for personal preference.
Below are the starting pics. I still need to change some ground textures, add roads, change some of the turnout levers and possibly add signals for block operations...
I wanted a more spread out feel so the industries for the main yard area are not the main focus, instead I wanted focus on the freight cars filling up the yard vs the buildings. I like the large grain elevator which reminds me of the east coast ports that used them and is a good standalone structure.
The focus is on coal being transferred via the ferry/barge as well as grain and fuel to other ports. I may add a coal based powerplant that I was working on from a previous layout, not sure though.
Also would like recommendations for freight cars for the 1950-1960s era. As you can see only minor changes to the original track plan....I love hauling 40 plus coal cars through the hills using steam. Need to find some F7s, RS1/3s and any Diesel suggestions for this time period.
