We are pleased to announce that a section of the Diesel Group at the National Railway Museum in York UK, have been given permission to work on Deltic 55002 “The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry” (KOYLI) to bring the locomotive back to full working order.
After an abortive effort in 1999 to return Koyli to the mainline by another diesel group the locomotive was moved to Wabtec at Doncaster with many key components missing. 55002 then found a home at the new depot of the Deltic Preservation Society at Barrow Hill where the loco was cosmetically restored to BR Blue before returning to the NRM at York in 2006."
The koyli group last summer carried out a full engineering audit of the locomotive and various components, which were literally scattered throughout the York site and, discovered that a return to working order was feasible. With this in mind the locomotive has been worked on most weekends since October 2008 and will shortly be moved into the main engineering workshops.
Parts already being given to the cause are from a wide range of preservation groups including the Class 50 Alliance Group, Royal Scots Grey and The Deltic Preservation Society. Parts missing which include two radiators will need to be manufactured. Therefore an appeal for funds is being launched. The aim is for the locomotive to work on preserved railways and will also take pride of place in the superb interactive display “The Flying Scotsman Story” when 4472 is away on tour. All funds raised are exclusively ring fenced for 55002 with the NRM also providing additional financial support.
