The How to Design a 1950’s North American themed Trainz layout thread

In an earlier post I mentioned that I had uploaded a new high quality track well suited for the 1950s in the U.S. Here are the details:

Name: SAP Track Wood SG with weathered ballast

Description: U.S. standard guage track with wooden ties, baseplates, iron spikes and weathered ballast. Highly detailed with multiple LOD. No 3d iron spikes are used for better performance. This is a re-skin of the SAM Track - II/B class1 v6 NO 3D SCREW by Wojtek Cholascinski (samplaire). My thanks to the original author for his great item!

Disclaimer: This is my opinion and is not intended to be a degradation of the creator. I find these tracks a bit too shiny. They are great for night running, you can really see them in the dark and I love the detail. But they just seem a bit too bright for my eye.

If you can get hold of a copy, Model Railroader did a special called Modelling Railroads of the 1950's in (I think) 2005.

Many Kalmbach track plans seem to be set in the halycon days of the 50's (101 Layouts and Track Planning Ideas) so even if you're not wanting to do a model sized route they give some idea as to the facilities and types of traffic conveyed.

I am trying to unload coal on the high line at the power plant. When I try to send a train there it says "Path not Found". I have also driven a train to the power plant and coal cars will not unload. I checked in surveryor and there is an industry there B12 Bulk or B12 Fuel and it is setup, but trains cannot find the industry to unload. Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks

Sorry it took so long but the issue was a complicated one and required replacement of that industry structure. I have just uploaded a new version of the Indiana Western to the DLS which fixes this problem and also replaces the existing non-U.S. bullhead track with my new high quality U.S. track. The new verrsion of the layout should be available for download from the DLS in about 48 hours or so. See my support thread for the Indiana Western in the "freeware" part of this forum for further details.

Not so minor, in my opinion, and other traffic control devices were different, too. At some places and some times, "no passing zones" were designated by a solid line down the center of the lane; until the 70's, many states had their own "No passing" signs, too. Also, for about 20 years, ending in 1954, stop signs had a black legend on a yellow octagon. Other street signs were also different, if only in typeface and size, than later versions.

This is kind of a minor detail, but yellow road markings/stripes weren't standard until the 1970s.

Actually, that depended on the state. Federal standards were no adopted until the 1970's. Before that, each state had their own standards. I grew up along US Higway 30. The lines were always yellow in the 1950's as I recall.

Historic MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)

In my quest to find historic highway signs I found this.

Several of the manuals have been scanned from the 1930's to the present. Each manual gives detailed pictures and descriptions of these highway signs and their placement to the road or warning.

Thank you for the link, Dricketts, that's a useful resource.

What does Trainz have in the way of old-fashioned grade crossing protection?

I know that BNSF50 has a few, including wig-wags, as part of his NRC system. I believe CloakedGhost also has a wig-wag on the DLS.

Are there any others?

Here is a 60 meter long low wooden passenger platfrom designed to be used with passenger stations that have no platform and/or are not passenger enabled. This platform is passenger enabled with ambient sound effects. Great for those 1950s or earlier layouts! This item is based on original meshes and textures by Ben Dorsey.

Steam locos that are scenery

Hi,
I'm building a route, The Esquimalt & Nanaimo, from the late 1800s, when it was primarily logging with some coal and passengers. I'm targeting the build to the end of the steam era. What I need for the 7 rail museums etc. are some steam engines that are scenery.

I was hoping some kind person would post the location on DLS (or anywhere) of any; (I've searched, alas to no avail)
or the instructions on converting "live" to "scenery" My efforts fail with the bogies.

cheers,
--michael.

Here is a list of vehicles that I use in my 1950's based TRS2012 layouts which have worked well and are appropriate to that era. This list is not meant to be all inclusive - just the ones I have used. All of these vehicles are either on the DLS or are built into TRS2012. Many of these vehicles will be in my soon to be released new Maine Central Portland Division layout which like my previous Indiana Western layout will be based in the 1950s.

Over the last two days I have uploaded to the DLS over 50 billboards I have created which are appropriate to the U.S. 1950s era. These billboards are on wood poles and have a night mode which means they are lighted. They are also height adjustable. These are a re-skin of the 'MLF - Billboard - Teds Root Beer' by Michael Ferrell (Leeferr) and with his permission. My thanks to Mike for allowing me to do this!

Lots of great new billboards for fleshing out those great 1950s U.S. layouts! For Trainz build 3.3 or above.

They should be available for download over the next few days.....
